Hey all,

I'm taking my family to Ouray in less than 2 weeks. Part of the planning is at least one of sleeping in my 200.

I know I've seen, somewhere, a note about bug screens, but searching through the old links, can't find it.

Does anyone have a recommendation for bug screens that easily fit a 200?

Also, if anyone has advice on what to see in SW Colorado at the end of May, I'm all ears. It will be my family's first time out there.

Thanks @CharlieS , I should have searched insect instead of bug.

I have a set of these. I have not used them yet so can not give a review on them yet. I will tell you that it did take over a month to get them. If you need them in 2-weeks I would not count on getting in time.

If you can’t find a quality product by the time you leave you can go to a fabric or some special outdoor equipment stores and buy mesh net by the yard, then either close the door on it or stick it to the body of the truck with flexible magnetic strips.

I got a very nice pair of rear door window mesh nets a few years back for mine.. will have to check the brand when I get home. Israeli, I believe. They were tough to get back then and sold for 80-series by a guy in that section. but might still be available.

As for SWCO.. a lot of the very best stuff will still be closed by snow, but it will be gorgeous regardless. Look into the following: box canyon falls, governor basin, Old lime creek road, any of the trails out of silverton or even walking around the town, animas forks if they didn’t have more avalanche trouble this year.. basically all over the place.

^ this suggestion from @bloc is the quick way to do it.

I've never slept in my 200, but I slept in my 80 many nights. I used flexible screen and magnets from the hardware store (local place, nothing fancy), attached to the outside of the vehicle. It isn't fancy, but it got the job done. Might be a good option if you are in a hurry.

Your options for off road are going to be limited by snow. Most of the 4x4 routes aren't open until June and even late July or early August for the higher ones in a normal year. No prediction as to the effect of the Covid on the plowing activity.

OH! Also, depending on if you need the second row for the family it can be removed for a lot more leg room when sleeping. You’ll need to add a resistor to the rear airbag harnesses to avoid a dash light though. I can’t remember the value but it is posted elsewhere in this section.

I think I’m going to call some of the local forest services or visitor bureaus.

Also, my wife and I have 6 kids, so getting rid of seats isn’t really an option. I’m looking at a 2 vehicle caravan, my 200, her Sequoia, and just figuring out how to see cool stuff with only 5 at a time or all of us with some utilization of a stock Sequoia.

The sequoia will go a lot of the places that would be open now as it is. Definitely park in the lot off 550 by the south end of old lime creek road and head down to check out cascade creek. Great spot for a family to spend some time.. a friend of mine even found a nice sized gold flake by panning there a little.

Here's my experience with car camping gear:

OP- you may already know this, but FWIW: all developed USFS sites (developed campgrounds, trailhead facilities, day use areas) are closed through at least May 31. Dispersed camping is "allowed but discouraged."

I also believe that Ouray County (and several other mountain counties) are currently banning or restricting any overnight stays (including camping) by non-residents, so definitely look into the status of those local restrictions before your trip.

You can make your own bug screens with some window screen, flexible magnetic strip and hot glue

These are them. They fit a 200 like they were custom made for it. I got them from @LandCruiserPhil a number of years ago. Not sure if they are still available. Here's the for-sale post from 2016: Window Screens/Socks 80/LX450 100/LX470

You guys can try contacting him from there if he doesn't chime in with my notification.

Lots of good options, thanks all.

@canyonrider , thanks for the intel. I need to call their visitor center and see what is available.
