Budget cost?

How much does it normally cost to have an axle narrowed down? What kind of shop should I be calling for estimates?

I want a 14 bolt for the rear, and a D44 for the front (8 lug) of my Pig.

How do you cut down axles? I'm ok with cutting the tubes, but the axles have me wondering. Would I just buy custom shafts?

Dana 44's (8 lug or not) are not much stronger than a yota axle.. Try and find a 60 if your going through all the trouble..

Like mace said, i would do the housing yourself and call around to have a custom length shaft made..

on the 14 bolt, you want a centered rear axle??

If not, just do two short side axles.. No axle mods necessary..

Yes, centered. I have a 205 case I'm using. And a D44 is fine for me, it won't be locked and the Pig won't have gigantic tires on it.

I'm sort of stuck between SOA and not. The Pig has a 350 in it, but the axles have coarse spline pinions and I don't want that to be a weak point. I had thought about going full width axles with some deep off-set hummer bead locks, but I guess they only come in 16.5" diameter. I don't want the Pig to be tall, but I want some 34 x 10.50 (or similar). I'm not afraid to cut sheet metal (whats left anyway).

Uuugggg. I can't decide. And until I decide, I won't be moving forward, which makes me sad.

do a Ford 9" rear axle. plenty of cheap upgrades to that axle...

That isn't a bad idea. I could stay SUA and keep the front. Do you think the coarse spline pinion will hold up in the front with 33's and no locker?

or find yourself a 60 or 62 front axle, and do a Hybrid rear, A club member here in CO has a centered rear and 60 front for sale 58" wms-wms

34's and a 14B would be goofy

i have not broken my course spline pinion in the front with 37's & a V8 (knock on Wood)

1973. I know the axles aren't any stronger, I was just thinking about the pinion.

Hell then, do I even need to worry about the back?

centered rear output makes an axle replacement/hybrid kinda important.

What do you guys think about using the center section from a Land Cruiser and the tubes out from a early mini truck? Like in the back yard fab article from a few months back (maybe a year, I dunno) in Toyota Trails.
