damn steel suppliers screwin up my plans. atleast luke porter was kind enough to call me several times to let me know the status of my order

i'll have plenty of practice rebuilding a front axle....

edit: and one tech question: does a front locker + front drive flange = big no-no on the streets?

As long as your not in 4WD with the hubs locked on the streets you'll be fine. Mike didn't that I heard and I've read others on here that didn't have any issues. Are you adding an Aussie to the front?

i may have :grinpimp:

i have the drive flange, so i dont have the selectable hubs.

Thats right  Your 40 is the first I've seen with those hubs. Thats a question for the 40 tech section maybe there are a few others that have experience with them. It was originally from CA wasn't it.

I've been thinking about an aussie in the front of mine too. I don't really understand the details though. I have the twin sticks and can go into 2-Lo, but do I also have to get out and unlock the hubs everytime I want to make a tight turn? Or is just putting it in 2-Lo enough....

From what I understand about the aussie locker you shouldn't have too as long as everything is spaced correctly, if it is set up too tight it will act as a spool, atleast that is what was told to me by a guy named Elvis (no lie) at gilmer last year.

here is how it goes: as long as it is not recieving power from the drive shaft it should (I think) operate almost like a open diff. What it does under power is make certain that neither tire can rotate slower than the diferential is turning. So like in a right hand turn, it will be driving the right rear tire while the left hand tire is free to rotate faster than the differential.

In the front, if you are in 4wd it would operate the same alowing one tire to overrun the other but still the right rear and the right front would be locked into the same speed if turning right. In 2low the differential would just be along for the ride with the hubs locked so it would be driven by the tires, but they would not be "locked" to each other like with a spool because the differential is not driving them. I imagine the inside tire in the turn would still be the tire "locked" to the diferntial but since the drive shaft is not being driven by the Tcase it would be able to spin faster than the rear driveshaft so you arestill ok and can turn normally.

This is all just from my reading up on it, if I have it figured out wrong, let me know ok?

P.S. I just re-read all this. I should have just said I don't think you would have too.. my head hurts from trying to remember all this now >.<

2 Lo should disconnect the driveline to the front axle from the transfer allowing you to steer better I would think. :)

does anyone have a SWR meter for tuning cb radios and antennas?

Yep, it's a Radio Shack one. Not hard to use at all I would call it a one  type job. Just have to pick one spot to mount it ( unlike me who keeps moving mine around). Let me know when you're in the area you can pick it up hang on to it to play with.

Bummer dude... Am I going to have to take vacation time to finaly get to wheel the same trails on the same day as you? ;p

Hey, How many 's is pulling the differential out of the front axle? I am 90% sure I can handle the rear no problem. I am just afraid of the birfields. :D Just about have the money to order everything and have the shop set up my gears. Will save me quite a few hours of labor if I just bring him the chunks.

rebuilding the 3rd is the hard part. if all you are doing is pull it as once piece and bringing the whole 3rd to your diff guy, then its pretty easy.
