Wow, I thinnk my opinion of the new FJs was just changed....

That was my red 40 at the bottom of the hill that you see after he breaks...I was just sitting down there waiting to come up. He got on the skinny pedal a bit more than the video shows, but still the carrier in the 3rd shouldn't break like that. My heart sank when I heard the grinding and the rear wheels stopped spinning. Its a taco third. Is it a common problem in them too? I do know that Tim Scully broke one on one of the trail teams FJs earlier this year.

Like everyone else, I'm dissapointed that the dealership didn't cover it (the third). I'm not sure its appropriate to condemn Toyota just yet. They (Toyota USA) may have no idea, but if they do, shame on them :censor:

I really felt sorry for the guy, drove all the way up from Fla and broke friday afternoon.

 to him for trying, but I'd still talk to anyone at toyota USA, even those that won't listen.

What difference does a lift really make when the rear end is involved? That's chicken s*** in my opinion for Toyota not to cover! Dont' tout the off road capabilities if you aren't gonna cover it. The trail team said they have broken a couple of rear ends themselves. I'd push Yota on this issue!!! Lift or not!!!

Later,

I think the video doesn't show a very clear picture of things. If I'm not mistaken, that's the same spot where Steve Smith was denied in his 80 late on Saturday. He came down and I walked it and decided that I didn't want to mess with it either. That ledge takes a real bump in a long wheel base vehicle. And bumps are where things break.

At the Roundup three years ago we came across Roger Theurer with a broken pinion at the base of an obstacle that I had been up in my 80 earlier in the day. The problem? He bumped too hard at the base. It happens and parts like pinions give out.

Short of the money, I don't feel bad for the guy at all. He's out there testing the limits of his vehicle in its current form and he found the limit. Wheel it, break it, make it stronger.

He had to have smacked the pinion on the ledge.....descent spotting would have prevented that. "BACK UP AND HIT IT" is one of my favorites too, but not always the answer.

Well, another problem that I noticed was that the ground right before that ledge was powdery and useless in terms of traction. So if you didn't have some speed when you got there, you were hosed. But the right amount of speed is clearly the key.

I saw a post on the LCML eariler about FJ's vs 40's the poster stated that a local dealer told him that they generally add 8-9 grand to a FJ with aftermarket parts like LIFTS, bull bars, tires, winches, etc. and this voids a warrenty?

I agree, but simply taking the time to "mock up" where he was going to hit and then factor in a few inches for spring and tire compression would have quicky had them grabbing a tow-strap.

I don't know, but I've watched it many times and I think he was right at the top with all clear underneath when it broke. It looked lik the rear was climbing fine. The higher up he went the more clearance he was getting underneath.

Jenni had expressed interest in an FJ before the ride, but I know that her thoughts have changed on that. The primary reason for that change has been this thread and the hardships of that guy.

Jenni has informed me that due to my drinking a lot, i must have misunderstood her interest in the FJ. She simply wanted to see it in action, not put one in the driveway. She wants a 100 series, not a pansy ass FJ. :whoops: Well, I guess that she got to see it in action for what ever that was worth.

get her a 40 and you can sit on her spair tire in a bikini and take a picture and she can use that as her avatar.

Don't give him any ideas!??? He already thinks he's hot.

Lager,

I just saw this thread and a couple on another forum with the video so I figure I should post something. Got the call from the dealership today that it's ready for me to pick up. The final damage was $3715. I plan on doing a full write-up with pics of broken parts and all when the dust clears and I know what the final word is. I did call the Toyota Customer Experience line and expressed my concerns. They engaged the dealership and I got a call from them today so I sent a link to the video and started further conversation regarding the warranty.

So, I personally don't think that what I was doing should have caused the damage it did. That being said, I also take responsibility for my own actions and I am well aware that I took a new vehicle out there and put it at some risk. I knew there was risk and I assumed that risk when I started out on trails, I just wish that I had known the price tag before hand so that I could have been doing something REALLY stupid. I don't expect warranty of the tie rod because of the lift.

Also, I'd like to say that you guys [ya'll] are a fine bunch of folks. I still managed to have a good time and can't say that I regret going. Thanks for the concern and much thanks for not calling me stupid or not posting any derogatory remarks. I'll post a full write-up when all is said and done, I just didn't think it would take this long.
