Got home less than 20 minutes ago.

Broken Bell, Stub Shaft and Free Wheeling Hub on the right side. All I was doing was a multi point turn and only 31" LTB's.

I now have the pleasure of keeping the American Economy going.
Inner Axle Seals
Are the 30 Splines really just US$60.00 more? I'll get these instead.

Is it necessary to perform this procedure on a Hilux housing? This would dictate whether I go 30 or 27 Spline.

Whether or not you have to grind your knuckle balls all depends on the straightness of your housing and the tolerances of the knuckle balls. My experience has been 1 ball in 3 axles, it is a easy 5-10 minute job with a flapper wheel so I would not have it as a make or break point.

Depending on how much bigger you plan on going, type of front locker and your budget a jump right to the 30 spline set could be overkill. Breaking a stock birf on a truck with 31" tyres sounds more like a fatigue issue than a strength issue.

True, but he'll never have to worry about them again, or carry spares.

If they are truck axle housings, you shouldn't really need to do any fab work to install the Longfields at all. (unless the axle housing is bent, in which case you get the pleasure of getting out your tools)

The mini truck birfield seems to be a hair bigger in diameter than the Cruiser birfields, (don't know about the 80's...) and that causes some folks to work some trail magic when they have everything apart. Not like this happened to me back in my FJ40 days or anything...

When I put in my Longfields, all I needed was a rubber mallet to get them in.

The '79-'85 minitruck birfs are identical to the '79-'90 Land Cruiser diffs. '76-'78 Land Cruiser birfs were a little smaller.

mark...

The Longfields arrived this morning(Saturday) by USPS. Total cost $945.93

Ummm some one help me out here. Why did it cost you $300 extra? Website list the super set at $645. I ask because eventually I'll be getting 30 spline Longs and don't want to get caught off guard.

I'm having a hell of a time getting the long side into the Diff, any tips would be muchly appreciated.

Dude i had the exact same problem, here is the solution, loosen up the third member and pull it out just enough so there is about .5 inches of room the third and housing. Then it will slip in there like butter. Also, if you have trouble loosening the 3rd, just put a floor jack underneath it and it will break the seal. Good luck.
