I'm about to do this - what's the process ?

Pulling the rotors (which then requires the front wheel bearings to be repacked) is a complete waste to me unless you've got a braking vibration or similar issue.

I just noticed some vibration under heavy braking. What do you guys think I should look at? Brake job definitely in the near future.

Thanks Matt

The only time I had any vibration it was from a rear rotor. I would never have guessed that one. You might start by placing the t-case in neutral and jack a wheel at a time off the ground and listen for the pads to drag off and on the rotor as you spin the wheel. This may help you identify the bad rotor and then do the proper service as a pair, either front or rear.

I bet you had your rotors turned at some point in the past Matt.

My moms 97 suffers from bad brake shudder, due to warped rotors that were turned.

Bailey-

I got the whole brake job from (Napa Service station) 1.5 years ago. That included new rotors, pads and one front caliper. Man that service bill hurt. So the rotors are supposity new (according to service guys), but who knows.

If you were low in brake fluid, would that affect any shuddering?

Give me the $650 and I'll drive to Cali from Pennsylvania and do the job for you. $650.00 should cover my gas/food/lodging on the 3000 mile drive out. I'll even bleed the brake system for free with my powerbleeder. Anyone else between PA and CA I'll stop and do the same thing. Screw it let's say $500.00 a job. This could cover my next spring riding trip and maybe pay my way to Cruise Moab. Snowcruiser's mobile brake service is now up and running....nationwide.

Really...kidding aside you will save a ton of cash if you make time to work on your truck yourself. I've probably saved near $6000 in labor in the last two years for probably less than 4 days worth of work....my time is limited also but I don't make $1500 a day so I make the time...and save the money. Yes I've done a lot of prevenative maintenance but that has actually probably saved more over time as the typical mechanic would let things go until more expensive parts need replacing....ie birfs...etc.

This forum, the FSM and a continuously growing toolbox will make a mechanic out of anyone....it's therapeutic also.

Cheers

Note taken, I'll be doing the brakes and saving the money.

PKP80 - I've said it before and I'll say it again, as B and others will attest.....if I can do both the front and rear brakes, ANYBODY can. Let's see, at an average of $300 per job, either front or rear, I've saved about $900 less Cdan parts over the dealer. It's more than paid for the jack and stands I purchased. I'll also give the rotors a try when they are ready in another 40-50K miles. Dealer wanted something like $900 for that job the one time it's been done. Talked him down some, but don't remember how much. I must have looked pathetic and poor that day and he took pity on me. Either that or they know me well enough to know I'm a good customer. They've cut me some slack on some other jobs as well.

Nope, "low" brake fluid in the resevoir doesn't affect anything until it is so low air gets introduced into the system. Then your fawked. :D

I am finding my Sony digital camera to be indispensable too. At midnight last night (tired as hell), I ripped the emergency brake assembly apart for cleaning and inspection. Having taken a picture before hand sure made it easy to reinstall the springs and clips, more so than the FSM.

I just ordered up new pads and rotors for the front and rear from CruiserDan! This should be interesting!!!
