So doing my 1st oil change since rebuilding the motor figured I'd change the tranny oil too.. out popped this bolt tranny still performs normally any idea what this goes to. Did change the oil about a month ago due to the pins that hold the shifter in so I know this happened very recently.. 1972 fj40

I would pull the transmission cover and then remove the transmission cover. Would inspect the guide on the underside of the cover.
That is exactly what that part is. Four screws from inside the top cover hold the shift guide to the cover.

It’s an obscure part, but no doubt that anyone with a spare column shift cover can get you a screw from. @pardion? @landcrusher909?

As a follow up, you should disassemble before asking for replacement parts. There is a sleeve that fits between the guide and the cover that is captured by that bolt. You might need that too.

The nut on the outside of the cover is a standard 6x1.0.

In more research I believe the bolt is this one. as the tranny leaked gear oil as well. Which is a pivot point for the reverse linkage.

Your pic is of a 4speed. 72 would have come with a 3 speed. And since you didn’t mention that it had been changed, my post was based on you having a 3 speed transmission.

its a 3 speed guess Ill have to pull the cover and see what lurks inside and pops out.

So the pictures above are of a 4 speed and and 3 speed 3 on the tree? As mine is 3 speed on the floor maybe ist similar to the 3on the tree in terms of that bent bold correct?

The column shift and floor shift three speed are the same inside. Cover plate is different. The four speed is completely different. The screw end with a nut attached is the lever to move into reverse. Three speed reverse is completely internal.
