Having owned a non-US motor in the US (and risking the wrath of Dan for what I'm about to say), I would say put a Cummins in there. That truck (which is absolutely beautiful, by the way) with a Cummins 4 cyl. turbo diesel/NV4500 would be unreal. Plus you would be able to get parts at most parts shops.

I would not waste the money on turbo-charging an indirect injected diesel. I had a turbo charged 2H in my HJ47 at 7500' in Santa Fe, and it was a major PITA to start when it was cold. Plus, I rarely got more than 16 or 17 MPG.

Profitt's Cruisers in Colorado does an incredible job on those Cummins transplants.

I'm with HJ47, go cummins. I contemplated a Toyota diesel in my '77 fj45, but after considering possible rebuild, turbo and intercooler, a 6 cylinder cummins was the only choice. I couldn't be happier. Great fuel economy and parts at the local parts shops.
By the way, I love this thread. I have been trying to figure out how to put a canvass top on my rear roll bar for a year now, and now I've got some good ideas. All the best

How have I missed your rig? Is there a write up on your transplant? I'd love to put a 6 cyl Cummins in my HJ47, but I've always heard it was too big.

I believe he is talking about the 4 cyl version. I have yet to see a straight 6 diesel on a toyota fj40 frame. It is wayyyyyyy too heavy.

That's what I've always heard as well. I am really interested in the 4 cyl. though. If I had known about that before I put the Vortec in my HJ47 in 2000, I would have gone that way.

H47, how do you like the Vortec engine? I've contemplated that swap. Why would you rather the Cummins?

Does the Vortec give plenty of oomph?

Roughly, what price-tag would I be looking at?
Thanks!

Go diesel, and never look back. Especially since you're rocking a sweet expo-built rig there, the lower power band, and greater economy would be infinitely better than even the best gasser. My honest recommendation is to go 12H-T, great if maybe a little tractor-y motor, but it'll take you wherever you need to be reliably.
