Black smoke..

my view is if you are running that close to the max temp then change the driving habits. if you drive at 1100F constantly with the pyro in the manifold then and or 1200F with the pyro 3" from the actuall mounting flange of the turbo then change your driving style to compensate or crank down the fuel a bit.
to me, i drive hard so i use the 1200F (pyro mounted 3" from the actual blades of the turbo) as a guide to back off.
this is no hard and fast rule, just what i am comfortable with...
this is personal preference and like i mentioned before, i do go against the norm on many occasions...
cheers

I am getting alot of black smoke through 3rd,4th and 5th BUT only under load. Now the engine has 250k (So it says odometer stuck) and I was wondering shoudl I lean it out a little or just leave it.. Its kind of fun when you have friends behind you and you can give them the smoke screen... what do you guys think?
Or could it be because of the cold weather??

How old are the injectors, if they are pretty old and haven't been serviced then I would say they need a service. Black smoke means unburnt fuel. You may want to try running some Redex injector cleaner through first - 500ml to 1/4 tank.

Andy,

Injector cleaner probably won't work if the injectors are original. It's good if the injectors are sticky but if they are worn then a rebuild is really the only option.

Wayne,

Not to stay on you but the highest temps are pre turbo not post turbo as your post implies. I'm sure it's just a typo.

ah, i can see how you would get that from my post, of course the temps are higher in the manifold in comparison to the temps in the pipe. i did a change of thought half way through the sentence. i was mentioning what max was dieseldog was talking about and then mentioned what i run for a max in the pipe...
thanks for allowing me to clear this up...
cheers

Yep I kind of agree there however it's a cheap and easy way just in case. Generally I would say the Injectors are Fubared with ridges on the needles and springs with no spring, probably weaping quite substantially.

However I ran Redex through my Diesel 4Runner (Hilux Surf) for 2 years and it kept the smoke down until I finally changed the injectors and cured the problem once and for all.

i would give the cleaner a try especially if you have not owned the truck since new. it is cheap and if you still need to rebuild after that then big deal. i have seen quite a few 3Bs gain power and loose black smoke because of a good flush... the 44K does a nice job followed up with Howles fuel conditioner.
