I have just purchased a BJ 74 86 with 13BT auto, Motor came in boxes in back. I have rebuilt the motor but can't get it to run with the vacum line connected to the intake shut off. If i remove the vacum hose it starts but then i can't shut it of unless i put the vacum hose back on. The vacum line is connected to a solenoid next to the auto dipstick. I have been unable to get any diagrams of the wiring or the vacum lines to work out whats wrong. Any help most appreciated cheers Jim.

No power to the shutdown VSV. It defaults to the open position, so no power to VSV= vacuum accessing the intake shutter pot. Try running ON circuit power to the VSV on the low rear left side of the block.
Or the VSV could be dead and stuck in the open position. But first make sure you have power to it when your key in in the ON position.
May the force be with you.

Thanks for your input team. The VSV what does that stand for and should it have power supplied as soon as you have ignition power ?. Does it have constant power with ignition and should this open or close the circuit, at the moment i have no power to the plug with ignition on so as soon as it starts it has constant vacum. does anyone have a wiring diagram for this model. This is a rare cruiser in tasmania australia so hard to get info many thanks Jim

Thanks 70s guy i see u have answered most of my questions already, do you know if there is a relay to this vsv as there is no power on ignition, I have checked all fuses but have no wiring diagram ot go on . cheers Jim.

Vacuum Switching Valve. There is no relay. It ties into the ignition circuit somewhere. You should have power at the plug when the ignition is turned to ON position. If there is not power then you will have to get a test light and volt meter and figure out where it went. Check continuity between the ground pin and chassis ground to rule out a bad ground. Check pin condition at the plugs too.
A wiring diagram might help a bit, but the pre 90 EWDs are pretty crude and won't give locations of splice points, plug locations, ground points etc like post 91 EWDs do.
Worse case or temp fix, run the hot lead from the VSV into the kick panel and spade it into one of the unused plugs (power windows or locks) that is has Ignition circuit power.
