I have to replace my exhaust in my bj74 and I usually have my top off in the summer, so a quiet exhaust is important. I found a factory Jdm replacement exhaust for $800 + install. Any other ideas as I am not looking for a hi flow loud exhaust as I have two kids in the back.
thanks in Vancouver BC

You can get quiet high flow, and your engine will be much happier for it. The turbo will spool up quicker, heat will not build up as quickly, and your engine will breathe better. If you can, go 2.5" custom front to back. A good quiet stainless steel muffler is the Aero Turbine. The one you would need is the 2525XL. The XL specs it with a resonator on the back of the muffler. Ateb in Burnaby can source the muffler, and do the install. http://www.aeroexhaust.com/

sounds good, but they all do when trying to be sold.

have you used one your self? what do you make of them?

Yes, two actually, after trying a number of others. Though I had a local fellow install mine..not Ateb.

I simply went for the 2525 both times...without the XL (resonator section). I like them. If one were topless, or wanted really quiet...go for the XL. Without is quiet too...no bark, just a little growl.

$800 sounds a lot. The guys at my exhaust shop bend them up on the spot for $250 inc fitting + muffler

cost depends on the system, if you want a generic bolt on SS then pay for it, if you wnat on that runs inside the frame, above the skid plate then you pay more...
a PROPER custom job will cost more then stuff and run. i have yet to have a complaint about the job the guy here in Calgary does.

you want to compare costs then post up pics and we can compare apples with apples instead of apples with oranges.

in the end, it really doesn't matter. i pay extra for the job i want, the way i want it done.

if you are financially challenged or really don't off road or care about loudness or care about longevity then go where ever...

if i wanted to i could get a "new" exhaust for $250.

As far as a muffler is concerned, even a cherry bomb ($30ish) is reasonably quite with a turbo. Spend your $$ on some useful upgrades.

And even then the trouble with the net is that regional differences in base cost are not taken into account. What one can get for $400.00 on one side of the country might be $300.00 in the middle, and $500.00 at the other end. This does not even consider any cross border issues, or taking it one step further and differing areas of the world. As mentioned, if you are getting what you want has value too.

Away from cost, region and custom vs stock...no matter what you end up with high flow is better then not.

One mans useful is not another mans useful. To each their own. I know people who are willing to go custom stainless all the way, each piece welded together, all bends full diameter. Last time an exhaust will ever go on the vehicle. For some that is a very useful upgrade.

Save your money and forget about the muffler! The turbo gets rid of the noise. Ive been mufflerless on my TDI Jetta for years. There was no difference in sound with or without the muffler.

I wasn't aware he was considering a SS exaust. My bad. I was under the impression that noise was the main concern, and from my experience, muffler or no muffler, a BJ74 is pretty quiet. Heck, I didn't even notice my exaust was rusted out before the muffler until a couple of days ago.

I thought we were talking about the standard MWB exhaust which I what I got for $250.
The shop I go to has a book of exhaust patterns. Ive been going to these guys for 20 years and always had the cheapest price and best service.

Are you the seller of the $800 exhaust:D?

Wayne, Rob had a custom 2.5" exhaust built for my truck. I was thinking Id do 3" before he had it done 2.5". In your opinion is 2.5" big enough for that 1HZ? Remember, I do intend on turbo-ing it soon.

yep, i have been running 2 1/2 on the turbo'd 1HZ for years with no issues...
