OK - I am new to this. I bought a jdm bj70. I don't know if it is locked or not. If it is, what does that mean - two levers for the diffs - but for the way the truck runs, operates climbs - locked means what, exactly?

A newbie idiot, coming out of the dark. Peter

Normally only the front LH and rear RH wheels are driven when in 4wd . Diff lockers engage all 4 wheels for extra traction.
(It can have some effect on the steering)

The newer ones are electronically activated,the older ones like yours have cables and are preferred as they low maintenance

Be thankful ,they are a much sought after option;)

Peter,
<sheesh>
you really need to start researching WHAT you are buying before buying them.

you were a newbie back when you imported your first JDM (and sold it) this is what? your 6th JDM import? you would think the newbie would have a bit of experience by now...especially with all the info sitting on thsi site waiting for you to dig it up...
suggestion, ask BEFORE you jump the gun.

in your original post you are not sure IF the rig has lockers, correct? who is doing your translations of the auction sheet? they SHOULD be able to at least tell you if it has lockers or not. when it arrives at their yard in Japan, do they not take pics and give a inspection report?

Yes, I have imported some from Japan - some minis, a benz, a nissan fairlady, plus my prado. This is my second LC, so I don't know much, hence the questions. I usually just get the bad news from the auction sheet - and my guy does not ship it to his yard then to the shipping yard. I am content with that and it is my choice to save some money. So far it has been ok - no big repairs or surprises - some small bulb replacements or brake pad replacement - one mini needed new drums. Two of my imports needed nothing to pass a Manitoba safety. I don't buy rusty and I don't buy with questionable mileage, nothing over 80,000 kms, nor accident repaired. BTW - I don't know that the auction sheet will have listed locked or not...
