Most of the chain parts stores in the US will look at you as if you're crazy when you tell them you have a BJ40. Or, they'll have a blank look on their face as they tell you there's no such thing as a BJ40 according to their computer. However, many parts are still available through Toyota, but I've found you need to have the part number in hand before you call your local dealer. Better yet, there's guys like @beno here on Mud that can get you anything OEM Toyota related if it is still in stock somewhere around the globe. There seem to be more and more Cruiser specific sites such as Cruiser Outfitters @cruiseroutfit that carry diesel specific parts. As for generic 40 series parts (brakes, air filters, etc) most parts stores can get that stuff if you tell them you have an FJ40. But in my opinion, it's better to go with Cruiser specific websites such as Cruiser Outfitters, that will get you the correct part the first time.

A number a years ago Toyota stopped selling parts for Toyota vehicles that they did not import to the US. There are exceptions but think it's a crap shoot which ones they will still sell. @cruiserdan has said as time goes on Toyota is stopping the practice of selling non US imported vehicle parts as they realizing which ones there are. He probably has a good idea how may BJ40 only parts you will be currently be able to get thru Toyota.
