The reason for the head gasket replacement? The old head gaskets were chronic leakers. Also cool about Cummins is they recognize problems with old designs and though the engine isn't produced any more (most of these parts cross over with current models though) they do out of their way to constantly upgrade. They also listen heavily to their mechanic's feedback and problem parts/areas. Also, again, really cool...

The leaks (coolant and oil) - note the paint on the block from the leaks). But even with the leaks, good compression. I think the engine was like this for years. But these leaks were the reason we didn't take the bread truck to Burning Man (which was the plan once upon a time).

Some headgasket debris... Scott bought a killer shop vac for the shop (how awesome is that)... I hope it gets it all/should have. You can also see the piston design of TDI style diesels. It takes all the volume of the cyl (in this case almost a liter per cylinder) and rams it all into that cavity in the top of the piston. The injector (mounted in the head) is just above the "mountain" in the hole in the piston...

mmmmmmmm, pics good. I can't wait to see this truck start to come together again!

P.S. I hate you for how low those gas prices are. Hopefully it gets that low around here soon!!

I was cruising, planning to stop in SLC tomorrow as I heard rumors of $1.86 down there today... I passed this station and errr--- ripped a u-ie and filled up. I think the high gas prices hopefully will have helped this country in the long run (efficiency, new technology, reliance on foreign oil) but boy it feels good to fill up for that low...

GLTH, M416 trailer uh? Cool... ;)

I know it. Even though I know these low prices are probably not here to stay, it's still nice to fill up for 50-60 instead of 80-100.

M416 was one of the toys I bought this summer, and I got it for a lot less than I should have been able to, thanks to one of the guys in GCLCNY. It's great for pulling around axles, core supports and other cruiser parts. I wish I had enough dough and a good garage so I could break it down and restore it like it deserves.

You have something like eleven months, sir, before a return. No Pressure.

Unless I go to Antartica for a while. Then you just have more time.

Sweet man! We miss you a lot over here. If you have $4000 lying around let me know as one of the cleanest pigs around is for sale... You came up in a great thread over on the Portal in a great thread about SOA. Typical portal-quality drawl and intellectual-style/BS that I'm kind of really digging...

I started re-reading some of my posts, I didn't realize how many times I repeated myself, sorry about that...

"Hey I got a mini truck! " (two-three times)...

TJ I plan to use the ZeroRust on the mini truck axle too when I get a chance. I really am liking it, again the hot rodders swear by it, it comes out cheaper than even rattle cans, and seems to have a nice plastic-style finish but really permiates well into the metal with proper prep. As far as "rust conversion" I've always been somewhat skeptical of that, but no big either way. I really liked it on the axles on the pig..

BTW, here is a pic of the mini-truck as she's sitting these days :) The famous Richard Dyatt on the left there (one of my favorite people of all time). Truck is Old Man Emu, ball joint spacers, 32's (as it says in my sig, sweet ride... )

So the news on the head came back... Despite good compression he was saying that 3 of the valves had pretty wrecked tips and to check my rocker arms. Doh! I trust these guys considerably and they are also giving me the hookup. They are basically regrinding all the valve seats for me and replacing three of the valves. Will be about $200 which I think is a good deal. Otherwise the head is pretty good. They'll mill it proportionately to account for the vavle grind so I won't need an oversized head gasket, which is also nice... I'll post pics when it arrives back and I get it back together in about a week...

Also the M416 came in which I'm pumped for. Damon (with the BJ42) and I are going to start tearing it apart after Thanksgiving...

Are you going to have a thread for this teardown in the trailer section?

Not too much to report other than another trip down to the sand blaster's. Tore down the M416 and will be working on there here and there in the next couple weeks or so...

Here is the link to the thread again.

I'm still waiting to get the head back. I dropped off the valve seals today for simple reassembly... I also got a ton of my rusty and less-than-cosmetically-perfect cummins parts blasted as well. Mostly just photos but enjoy...

Also, here is a pic of the house where the fish was cooking (page 4 I think in the thread). 2.5 years later.. Jeez...

I'm planning to paint and reassemble the engine shortly other than accessories (so they don't get in the way as I pull the engine in/out, etc...

Hey I was wondering how tall you are? There is a pic of you next to your old cruiser on Proffitts web page and I just was trying to figure out the top of you trucks height. Also, you don't think it could be any lower than you had it right.
