Hi all,

Very greatful to the IH8MUD technical pages, and OTTRAM's guides - I've not seen a dedicated thread for big end / main journal bearing and con-rod bearing exchanges with the engine in the vehicle. Despite this not being ideal circumstances, if there's no option at least there's a way. Will post pictures of the progress if anyone is in a similar situation

Your bearings are keyed/numbered, a standard set might work but won’t be the correct size for each journal.

The last one I rebuilt had one #5, three #4 and three #3 for the mains bearings but the rods had one #3 and five #4. I am rebuilding one now that someone put standard clevitt bearings in and it developed a rod knock after 10k miles. Just saying this is a lot of work to end up doing again later and potentially ruining the crank and block if not caught in time.

The con-rod bearings are all 2's on this occasion. The main bearings are marked 3,10,10,5,3,2,2. Looks like I'll be ordering more parts - any suggestions for a good supplier for these?

Cheers

Partsouq.com if they have stock

You can order individual bearings, or whole sets.

Looks like you can order a standard set for conrods.
And individuals for mains.

Found it, and yes - took some cleaning for it to show. The block is marked with 2222222View attachment 3678016

So the 3,10,10,5,3,2,2 is off rod ends caps?
Not sure the 10 or 5 is relevant.
Is there a number engraved or stamped on the side of the rod bolt boss?
Your pic of all 2s on the crank is for the rod jornals.

There should be another set of numbers on the front end of the crank for main journal sizes

Rod bearing size chart in the FSM.
Should be a 1, 2, or 3 marked on rod and crank.
Circle/arrow shows where on the crank each set of numbers is

There's a similar chart for main bearings.

Why not just get the number directly off the backs of the bearings? And why use anything other than Toyota bearings?

This has convinced me to do the job twice, first to just open it up and read the numbers, and again to actually replace them.
I'll give it a shot poking the USB camera through the drainplug first, but I doubt I'll be able to navigate past the windage tray.

The rockauto mahle/clevite rod bearing set had me tempted to do it as PM at around 400k miles. (in prep more power in the next year hopefully)

You might re-think that if you'd had to separate the oil pan and clean old FIPG off on your back.

Open it up, order the right size bearings, let it sit until you have the bearings to do it once.

If you can't do without the vehicle for a week, rent a car for a week or two.

Also, you don't want to remove and re-torque rod bolts reperatedly. They should ideally be replaced each time.
