Sounds nice to me as well, but May 7th is my wife's birthday, and being a :princess: , that ain't gonna fly with her.

The next weekend is my daughter's 3rd birthday and we're throwing a pirate party (arrrg!). The funny thing is, she'd probably prefer wheeling in Big Bear.

Mangler, I am intrigued by this rear bumper you're working on, any details (dual swingouts, receiver hitch, hi-lift mount, jerry can mount)? I'm looking forward to checking out your rig one of these days (sheesh, I thought I had a busy schedule) as I also want to build and expedition-type cruiser for extended Baja trips.

Details arent 100% dialed in yet. I dont need jerry cans, because i am also in the process of installing a 44 Gallon Long Ranger Aux Tank for a total of 69 gallons of fuel capacity.

I also dont agree with the whole mouting jerry cans on the back of your rig idea either. With the amount of morons i see in So Cal rearending each other everyday, i would even think of mounting a jerry can there. At least with my aux tank, it is going to be protected by one very stout bumper.
As for the bumper these are the detailed established so far:

-It Will Mount To The Frame with 3/4" Thick Plates That Will Stick Through The Bumper For Tow Points (pics at the bottom of this post)

-It Will have a 2" Receiver and will be tied into the frame

-It Will have a swingout tire carrier using the 4x4 Labs super duty spindle setup.

-It Will possibly have a hi lift carrier, but it will also be mountable on the roof rack

-It "should" follow the nice lines of the 80's better then the more squared off ones that you see for sale

3/4" Thick Mounting Plates (with poly bushings for shackles):

Damn, that does sound stout!

I agree with you on the jerry cans, there are some asshat socal drivers that are dangerous enough without adding flammable liquid to your bumper.

What part of SD are you in? I lived down there for about 10 years before making the move to the IE. I went to SDSU (graduated in '98) and lived in OB, La Mesa, College area, North Park, and finally bought a place in El Cajon. The traffic congestion in SD and the booming construction business in the IE prompted me to relocate. Still love my Padres, though, and my last job in SD was as a geologic consultant on the downtown ballpark.

Hey Dan

I live in the Clairemont area of SD. I love it. Very central and my location and communte route pretty much avoids all traffic which is damn near impossible here!

We WERE working on a large subdivision in the canyon lake area of Quail Valley. We are no longer working up there thank god! :D

Wow small world, my wife graduated from SDSU in 97 or 98, I forget. I used to commute to her place just off Friars Rd. when the padres used to play there.

Sounds like it will be exactly what I would like to have on the back of my rig. If you do decide to do a few more I might be interested. Are you having your aux tank made or using a premade model? I want to add capacity for Mexico trips as well but I am concerned about ground clearance too as I do like to rock crawl.

Yeah, Quail Valley is kind of a shathole. You must have been working on that Forecast Homes development.

RAYJON, sorry for the hijack. I'm still available on April 23rd for Big Bear, even though not many others are. Maybe Easter Sunday? We can have an off road Easter egg hunt for all of us kids!

Once the final product is done and finalized, we will see if there is interested in selling them. They wont be cheap, but i will assure you, they WILL be the stoutest out there! :D

I went with the 44 Gallon "Long Ranger" tank from OZ. It is made by a company called "Out Of Town 4wd" and is top notch stuff. I helped a fellow 80 owner install one of these and was baffled by the fact that they actually tuck up tighter then the stock spare tire!!!!!!!

Here is a picture of one installed:

Here is the link to the websites:

There are a few more that make them, and they are all in OZ

Ummmmmmm

Quail Valley

Nothing compared to 20-25 years ago,a very scary place then. My sister, move in and moved out in a hurry. Now Sun City is kinda nice, with those golf carts all over the rode going 5mph.

Quail Valley

With property values up, "Squirrel" Valley is starting to be developed. Now if they could just extend a sewer system through that area, and mitigate the septic systems, it might not literally be a shathole.

In Sun City it's not just the golf carts that do 5 mph, it's also the Buicks and Oldsmobiles with the perpetual left turn signal on, and a bluehair peeking up over the steering wheel.

Canyon Lake is also a golf cart community, but you're more likely to see a highly modified cart screaming down the road at 35 mph.:grinpimp:

How about the 30th? Still a Sunday for Smitty and hopefully no party/out of town/out of the country for all the others. Sounds like Big Bear would be a good destination for all.

Except Boston Mangler. How is the rear bumper coming? Are the bushings going to work?

Sorry to threadjack a threadjack, but I am good on really any Sunday. Please don't plan around me though as while trying to buy a restaurant my schedule can change at any time. I can't wait to show off the new ARB Deluxe (its deluxe fool!) and the new blue silicone PHH (Ok well I don't expect anyone on their knees trying to take off my tire to see the PHH). I really look forward to many future day/week trip with you guys and your families. I hopw you all continue to bring your:princess:s so that my :princess: will be even more excited about riding around on drit and rocks.

no big deal on the thread hijack I will be building a bumper here soon and want to see how the manglers ends up... thanks for the pix if you can keep them comming...

As for the first week in May I will be in Nor Cal... have a weeks vacation and am going to mom and dads for a few days then up to Oroville to see Grandma....

As I have said before I usually have to swap to get sundays off but that is no big deal... I am scheduled to work the night of the 23rd so even if only a few of us go up and prerun for a date in the future that would be cool to....we could do like last time and do 3 or 4 hours and go home.....

BTW I am still working all the scratches out of cathys truck from the last time... I even had to brake out the spray gun and some clear for one spot.... if the weather gets any better I will finally paint the hood where it has needed it for a year.... Next time I am taking mine so I don't have to do this afterward......black looks great when clean but shows everything.....

Later, I am off today and have to get back to doing my Honey Doo's.....

I was stationed out of Canyon Lake from the end of 1999 to 2002 and ran more calls than I would have liked in Qual Valley. I think shathole is an undersatement.

Brother you don't mess around! Impressive that they can get a tank that big up that high. Leave it to the guys from OZ to maximize range. I guess their backyard makes Baja look like a walk in the park. I appreciate the info as I am still learning about cruiser greatness and who makes what for them.

RAYJON sorry again for the hijack, if you can't hijack a fellow SoCal 80's member than who can you hijack?

maybe some should creats a "Modifications" section in our new little area!

Hmmmm

Big Bear trip on?

Hijacked thread hijack -

Does anyone still want to try to go to Big Bear?

How about the end of May or begining of June?

Boyd

Beginning of (or 2nd weekend) of June would be good for me!

Are we talking about camping too?

After may, i am free!

The camping idea works better for me.. with 3 kids they have to play... while I play... The first part of May I am in NorCal on Vac.. the weekend of the 20th or 27th would work.. or into June...

2nd or 3rd weekend in may w/camping sounds fun. No scout trip that month so all my weekends are free. First weekenis out due to job constraints getting away on 6/2.
