I picked up 3 1600 Pelican cases for cheap. My plan is to mount on top of my Gamaviti rack. Originally i figured i would use U bolts and mount them semi permanently. It would be secure but it means packing the contents in stuff sacks and things like that. The cases need to be packed and unpacked on the roof which could be a pain. Then i started thinking that using simple ratchet straps would be nice and simple. pack each case and then just lift them to the roof. But then i end up with a bunch of straps that vibrate and flap on the highway. I dont plan on putting valuables in them just things like camp stuff and clothing. The u bolts with the nuts inside the case and a small padlock on the case would be reasonably secure from a theft point of view in parking lots. The ratchet straps could be removed in a few seconds if someone wanted them. Any opinions or ideas?

Instead of U bolts you can use bolts with washers and wing nuts that go threw the rack and case on the in side that way they won't move around when locked down. To keep the straps from vibrating just put a twist in them that usually stop it.
I don't know what the floor of your rack is but the bolts can be permanent.
If you wanted to get fancy you can cut key holes in the case where the bolts go threw. line up the case drop it in pull back and lock it in

seems to me that one of the big pluses of Pelicans is their waterproofness. I would not want to put any holes in them if I can avoid it.

I use ratchet straps and tie down the loose ends. And only put things up top that are not needed that often and are light.

Good point. But if you stay at a hotel it would give you peace of mind that your stuff would still be there when you wake up.

Bolts with fender washers to spread the load over more of the plastic. Fender washers are thick washers that have a much larger outside diameter than normal.

In the back bed of the pickup I use a long straight cables, then run them through the locks that I use to lock the lids closed. Then I lock the ends of the cable down to tie points in the bed. You could lock the cable ends to the roof rack, and use twisted straps to hold the cases down. When camping I now use 1620s and a couple gun cases for all my gear. No need to tarp my gear.

Thanks for the advice. I think i am just going to use tie down straps. I am liking the idea of taking them off the roof to load and unload and access the contents.
