I would start looking for an aftermarket in Latin America,I have seen plenty PZ's around and so far had more luck with aftermarket then oem on some yota engines especialy 1KZ and 2LT.

We've got a massive number of used Japanese import cruisers here in NZ. Pretty much every Toyota engine is supported by the aftermarket. Except the 1PZ: Toyota

People throw them out and bolt in a 1HZ or 1HD-T if they have major issues. The 1HZ is more likely to not be noticed at safety inspections and not require certification.

Going to look at a 91 HDJ-81 tomorrow, has the 1HD-T engine. truck looks clean, is there anything I should be looking at specifically and critically other than the normal tuff I'd check in buying a used cruiser?

look for rust in the front floor pan, and where the front inner fender bolts to the body.

see the link here LCOOL.org :: Log in

also look for cracking in the chassis around the steering box

Get some rock solid guarantees on the BEB from the owner. Listen for louder than normal ticking at low rpm and idle.
Ask when the injectors and injection pump were last looked at. Timing belt etc.
How many klms has this 80 got on it?

Well, made a commitment to buy a nice clean 1990 HJ81 with the 1HDT engine. Japanese origin, RHD, and automatic transmission. Put a deposit on it and the wife and I are heading out Tuesday to complete the deal and drive it home. The owner is quite a bit anal about the truck and after an hour discussing the truck I felt pretty comfotable about buying his vehicle. If it's as good as he says I should be one happy new diesel owner. Stay tuned will report on the drive home when I get back. I had looked (from a distance) at a very clean looking HJ61 on EBay but it had some problems and was priced within $1000 of what i paid for the 81.

Couldn't you have put the deposit down after looking at it? Some owners who sound fastidious about a vehicle do stupid things to vehicles because they are stupidly fastidious.
My old neighbour who rubbed the paint off a new car because of his insistence that it needs polishing every 3rd day springs to mind.

Now #%(#$#_, I read through this thread and can I "please" get some love for the 1HD-T. All of this 1HZ talk has got me second guessing my decision to buy the 1HD-T from Joe. Going into an FJ62. Somebody talk me off the ledge.....

You'd need a hole in the head to go for a 1HZ over 1HD-T.

I dont have facts, or enough experience..... but I do have opinions ;) and I'd say you nailed it man. 1HDT is an epic motor!! Dont doubt yourself on that purchase for a second. Just think of all the money and trouble you will save not ever having to figure out how you are going to turbo your 1HZ.... its already done right by toyota!
I am in portland too, lets meet up when your swap is done. That thing is going to be a beast!

Well thank you. I have a post going in another thread about the 1HD-T and many of the responses were positive. Slow day at the office and noticed all the 1HZ love. Yeah, I'm excited and happy that I "met" Joe here on Mud. Engine will hopefully be here sometime next month and I plan on putting some pics up as the project goes.

PNW, you should come down to Willamette Blvd Auto and check in on the work. Be good to meet you......

How long do have to wait for Josh to fit you in? Last i talked to him he was booked till march and that was a month ago haha. I will definitely come check it out.

However long it takes. I won't go anywhere else.

i have a 1hdt swapped into my fj62 with an h55 and couldn't be happier. my truck is built for a similar purpose as what you're looking for. not hardcore crawling but very capable and good economy and good power. the 60 series also seems to have a little more cargo space though i've never owned an 80 to truest compare.

of course theres a lot of love for the 1HZ, its a 1HZ :D but just remember, you have an upgraded 1HZ ;)

the 1HD-T is to the 1HZ what the 12HT is to the 2H, turbo'd and refined versions of already amazing engines. in fact, the whole H family is amazing. the 1HD-T is just the most refined the family gets, so be happy man :)

It depends what you mean by "overlanding". I live in Africa and drive 1-HZ. Parts are plenty, fixing is easy (although you don't need to worry about this with a 1HZ), not prone to fuel quality issues and has plenty of power if you want to go off-road. I just did a 3,000 mi trip to the Namib Desert over Xmas and New Years and while I was not the fastest to to the top of the dunes, the truck loved climbing rocks.
This part of the world a land cruiser with HZ or HDT is the best. You get a bit more speed with the turbo on the roads, but if you want speed then don't buy a cruiser.
