What saginaw steering box have some of you used?

Year of donor vehicle
Model of donor vehicle
Approx. cost of treasure yard unit.

I read some threads that said it's best to install the PS first and then install the SBC 350. Any thoughts?

Anyway, as always. Your input and suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Viva El Cochino!

I'm using a saganaw 4 bolt 4 turn box from a 68ish impala. It is a tight fit and mine required crossmember modification. A scout box might be a better choice on a pig.

i ordered it from the parts store as a reman, so no treasure yard price. About $180 was what i paid, IIRC.

Howdy! I used the engine and power steering from a 1977 Chevy Caprice sedan. It is a 4 bolt, and 4 turn, I think. It steers really easy, even with my Krawlers down at 12. But, it does not turn as sharp as I wish. Some Saginaws have limiting stops inside, or so I have read on some old Hot Rod Boards. I managed to sqeeze mine in behind the radiator support, instead of out front like an FJ40 setup. John

Scout box is what I used. I think it makes for a cleaner and easier swap than the traditional saginaw swap.

As for doing it before or after an engine swap, mine was done during the swap:lol:

Same thought I had after mocking up the typ. Saginaw, thru the crossmember box, as some 40's have. The Scout box puts the pitman in the ideal location, closer to the steering linkage, using a 2" drop CJ arm. I'd plate the frame, where the box mounts, & add an inner crossmember to frame brace. You'll need to sleeve thru the frame, where the bolts go, & possibly trim the motor mount some. There's plenty of info of this mod on this board so look around :D

Found my box over the weekend. Went to the Pomona swapmeet and got for $20 bucks. Good score IMO.

Inkpot,

Do you have pictures of your set up?

LCHanna,

I looked and looked and looked... Nothing on the 4 bolt fabrication.

Depending on how the weather is this weekend. I'll be mocking up the placement of the SBC. I am still lost on the mocking up of the steering box. I can somewhat envision the cutting of the crossmember, but I would really like to see some pictures before I create a bigger mess.

Well thanks guys for your input.

I'll try and post some pictures, my camera is on the boat and I haven't had time to pick it up.

I saw (4) writeups in the TECH LINKS section alone. Sure there's more if you searched for "Scout box" & BTW, it's 3 bolts to mount the box. Good luck clearing the motor mount w/ your steering shaft & the crossmember mods

LCHanna,

I am aware that the scout box is a 3 bolt and I have seen all the write up in the tech section. I was referring to the Sag box being a 4 bolt. I have yet to see a write up on the 4 bolt. I figured out the crossmember modification. Haven't firgured out how to clear the motor mount/steering shaft clearance issue. I'll inform when I do.

I did the toyota on mine at first and went through two centerarms (broke them)...ended up with scout and couldn't be happier. Rob Matzell has a setup on here right now for sale for a pretty good deal. Anything under $100 is a good deal in my book.

I think Dozier put in an astrovan setup...that's another good option.

You might be able to run an IFS box off a toyota...

you don't need a sbc 350 in there...you can mount up a saginaw pump on a 2f. IronPig offroad has a good setup as do a few others...

Howdy! Yes, I do have some pix. They are a bit scattered, so it will be this weekend before I can post up a few. AA used to offer a 4 bolt Saginaw mount that was shaped like a frog. I don't know if they still have it. It was a body with a hole in the center so you could weld it to the frame, and then the 4 feet sticking out for the different setbacks on the 4 mounting tabs of the steering box. My frame cracked under this bracket, so I cut the welds off so I could reuse the bracket as a pattern. I am making a new sub-frame to fit the Saginaw to after I get the frame repaired. John
