That might be nice but I need a truck;p

Idaho is close, also.

Ahhhhhhhh, sorry.

It's only a day's drive from Buffalo! This past Oct, we left Coeur d'Alene at 0600 and made Cheyenne at 2000. Not bad. That was trailering my '40 behind my Dodge. :grinpimp:

Does the 22re have enough power? I know that is vague. Copaired to the 3.0. I think I have decided on the 22re as long as its got the power to get me up to 11,000. I'm not looking for rock crawling power, just normal everyday driving with some interstate and in the mountains.

I think I have narrowed it down just a few more ?'s

Thanks for all the input!!!

Erik

Does the 22re have enough power? Life in the hundred horsepower range is kind of like a lifestyle choice. My '88 4runner has a 22r in it and it does the bulk of my towing duties, my '94 4runner has a 3vze and it mostly sits in the driveway, my wife monopolizes the landcruiser and a tj, my brother uses his 22re powered 4runner to haul around a framing crew/tools, and he uses a tj to chase hookers. I have access to trucks with bigger engines, I just like my 22re- I overload it- over rev it and generally just beat on it. It does every-thing I ask even when I ask too much. Many will say the same about 3vze's but I would rather change the head on a 22r than adjust the valves on a 3vze.

Amen to that!!

Driving the 22RE is a lesson that Physics doesn't lie, it's all about "conservation of momentum". It will get you anywhere you want to go, just don't be in a hurry to get there.

It's still by far my favorite engine to work on.

If you read through the FAQs on power for the 22RE. You will find that the 22RE can be rebuilt to put out 150+ HP. IIRC, that is equal to the stock HP of the 3.0 V6.

Now take my truck, if you read my post in reader's rides. You'll see that I have rebuilt my engine. Now, this was a stock type rebuild with only a better cam and a header. My engine probably makes the 116 HP that Toyota lists as its rated HP. I drive my truck in the mountains of Colorado regularly and it does fine at 11,000 feet loaded up with my camping gear. Would I like more power? Yes, I would and I plan to rebuild this engine again following what is recommended in the FAQs to get it.

150HP is really, really pushing it. Most state the practical limit is 140-145.

I love my '85 4Runner. I know you are looking at a truck... but in regards to the 22RE, it can be built to have enough torque, and is reliable, and as others have said, has an excellent reputation as one of the best blocks ever built. It has been known to put out over 700 HP on a Supra. And a piece of cake to work on.

On the IFS vs SA, if you don't need the SA, no need to drop the extra $$ on the SA, but if you find a great deal, go for it. The IFS is proven and reliable. It has more moving parts and is tougher to build up, but take into account your goals and shop accordingly.

X2. I also have an EFI 85 and I love it. Toyota solid axles are stout, but so are the IFS rigs. I prefer the 22RE over the V6 but if you do more freeway driving than trail driving, get a v6. better power to keep up with traffic.

Uh... No way in hell a 22re is going to put out 700... And those in the Supra are 7mg-te's... 3.0 Liter inline 6 with very nice sized turbo's and are capable of handling 30+ psi of boost w/ the right setup.

Guess what?

The wife and kids want me to get a 4Dr 4runner instead of a pickup:hhmm:

Talk to me:confused:

We alredy have two pickups, so it might make sense:eek:

Erik

Everything that applies to pickups also applies to 4Runners. :)

1984-1988 4Runners have some rust issues though.

X2 My brother got a '93 model 80 last year and it is sweet. 4runner price, 4doors, hauls butt & live axle on both ends. He spent about $3000, and at that price I'd rather have the 80 than a later model 4runner.

93 is the first year of the FZJ... Much nicer than the FJ - engine, options, etc. I prefer the 95-97 w/ a 40th anniversary w/ lockers being the dream.

I don't know much about land cruisers, but now that they can be had for the price of a 4runner I intend to find out. We have a pile of pick-ups & 4runners because they are the cheapest way to put a tough truck on the trail, usually for about what you pay for the pick-up you can do the mini-truck formula: dual cases, detroits & gears, live axle up front. Our jeeps cost us a lot more because of expensive Xfer cases and weak axles. A toyota pick-up really is the cheapest way to rock-crawl. Up until now we never considered land cruisers because we thought they were too expensive, but that '93 FZJ was too good to pass up. It won't see rocks until the girls get tired of it, but so far I consider it a bargain.

oh what have I started......

1fz will cost you wayyyy more, I get/got the feeling this is a "fill in the gaps" vehicle......

and thats why I suggested it, so the 2 mpg less it gets than a 1fz which = parts premium + labor......is not like the 3fe thats like the old stove bolt chevy motors, anyone blindfolded can find parts and work on it.
