question .. it is posible have a water proof boot that isn't insulated ..?

Down here in the trail it's usually wet/muddy but hot .. so I want waterproof boot but fresh .. I'm now with pair of Cabelas that have a zipper to cover ties part ( save a lot of work when you need to clean all mud ) but are not good about water proofing and are kind of hard and heavy.

Check out the Danner web site. I filtered all boots for "water proof" and "hot" climate and got two hits:

X2 on the Danners.

I have Danner light hikers and they replicate my combat boots except for color and height. That said, I have "hiked" routinely of distances over 30 miles with 60-140 lbs packs. The Danner's have served me well. The other plus side of almost all of the Danner boots is that after you wear out the soles you can have them resoled as opposed to throwing them away because they had a molded sole that nearly wrapped teh boot like a tennis shoe.

I have a pair of Merrells that fit like a glove. Over 10 years with these boots and never a blister or problem. Their starting to look a bit rough, but not ready to replace them yet.

My wife had a nice pair of Asolo's that she paid quite a bit of cash for, but they would shred her heels in a matter minutes. She switched to Mendl's, had them properly fitted by an "Al Bundy" kinda guy and now she can hike all day. No more bloody heels and a happy wife.

Not all expensive boots are good, and not all cheap boots are crap. Make sure they fit and feel good before going on the trail or it will be quick trip.

For hiking, overnight backpacking and multiday trips ... I have used Zamberlan (great boots), La sportiva boots and Merrells but over the years I have settle on trail running shoes and approach shoes with a good sticky rubber sole La Sportiva Exum Ridge Pro (FriXion®) and the 5.10 shoes with Stealth C4 or S1 sole.... they are lightweight.. comfortable and provide great grip..... they are not water proof tho'..........but I have learned to live without that....

Goodluck !!!

I tried on a pair of Asolo's this weekend, they felt miserable in the store.

Also tried on a pair of Zamberlands, they felt great right out of the box and had a full leather upper. $265. (I strongly dislike boots that have fabric used in the uppers, foxtails find me wherever I go and they have a habit of working their way into the most painful places.)

I'm going back to Scheels and try the Merrells again, I kind of hate to buy them since the leather upper is a special order(Also more expensive than the fabric) and there is no guarantee they will fit like the ones in the store. I guess it comes down to their return policy.

Mine have an Eagle, Globe and Anchor branded on the heel and I've warn them in Iraq, Afganistan, Norway, Turkey, Germany and Australia and they are comfortable, durable and lightweight. I agree the most important thing is fit, followed closely by a good pair of socks.

The new boots are much better than the first pair I was issued back in the "vietnam era." Check out a surplus store but get the canvas side rough out leather version.

The three most important things in oreder are: 1) fit, 2) fit, & 3) fit. Good socks help too, but nothing helps a boot that fits poorly.

There has been some good advice, and many good brands mentioned... of course even good brands are only as good as they fit. If you want a short educational read on how to find/fit a good hiking boot I think this is a pretty good read (I wrote it :hillbilly:).

I have been wearing the LOWA Zephyr Desert Mid and the Zephyr GTX for my walks in the mountains of Afghanistan and could not be happier with these boots.
