Public service announcement for those with Rivians. I think 2022 models had a recall for this but now it's a customer service campaign. Wife heard a terrible screeching noise on the highway yesterday and I came home to find one of the driver front hub bolts backed out and had been grinding on the half shaft. Internet search shows it happening to many many vehicles around similar mileage. Ours is at 16k. I know there are several others on here with R1s so please go check your torque on the hub bolts.

So we had a similar sound. I tried to look under on the side of the road but couldn’t really find the problem.

Changed the suspension height and sound went away.

Rivian El Segundo said they replaced the halfshaft.

A month later I hear a pop and then a rhythmic soft thumping sound. I go under the car and I’m able to shift the driver side half shaft with my hand. Like the inner CV was backed out. I was in San Diego at the time and it was a cluster. But took it to Rivian San Diego.

They said the other shop installed it wrong. Did it right this time. And thought they heard noise from the passenger side and so they did that one too.

They said they’ve had to do a lot of these. And he said they are “adding washers to allow the dirt and debris to get out”.

Which I’m having a hard time visualize but yeah it has sucked. We are at 20k miles. Another thing people don’t think about is how fast these things chew up tires. 20k and we are due for a new set….

They added washers to our 2022 R1T and it helped quite a bit. It sure seems like everything else in life...(nothing is free, always a cost somewhere) The EVs chew up tires and cost more for insurance... They are incredibly cheap to refuel in AZ with off-peak rates though.

yup
Offroad tires lasted less then 20K
Insurance is pricey
resale value going down
electricity bill way up
gasoline bill way down

We had multiple problems with the car. Rivian did try to work thru them but it was like watching a barrista at their first day of work...There was effort there but so many fumbles.

They offered to buy our car back....and pay off our loan and all past paid interest etc...We ended up with a little extra money and we did put it towards the 2nd Gen R1S. Build quality a bit better. Interior quality a bit better. Launch mode is unbelievably fun. Wife likes the car. Kids like the car. No mechanical issues so far.
