They were still around in Athens a lot in 1992 when I was in Atlanta. They would show up at some local bar as "The insulted paperboys" or something like that. Pay $3 cover and see REM. Missed them every time.
REM guys played at a benefit I attended a couple years ago in Athens. My girlfriend sat in on drums for them. We were drinking backstage and I decided to hit the head- I turned around and Michael Stipe was behind me. He had on lipstick and was wearing a Hello Kitty purse. No joke.
i've got the Riverbed DVD. It is a great movie. Greg, you are old enough for beanland...I listened to em....Hung out in that weird house on beanland too. had some friends who lived there.
I got lots of ties with those oxford boys...even jammed with George a long time ago.
Todd, You are right about Beanland being in the forefront of the "jam" scene. They definetly were pioneers there...
Man, I'm late on the discussion but I like the choice of music. Saw Beanland several times in college as well as WSP and The Grapes. I saw The Connels and Hoodoo Gurus at Ole Miss one time before I got banned from Oxford. Great music!!! Makes me want to get all of that music out of the case and have a little jam session. We need to take it all to the river on a pretty weekend and do a little cooking.
Jeff! I can't believe there are two bands that we both like!!! Guess that generation gap isn't so big after all-ha ha... but you know you like some of that booty music every once in a while!
OK Guys, I've been doing a little research and collecting a little info and the results are more than a little interesting.
As some of you know, I was born in Oxford in 1968 when my Dad was getting his masters in City Planning. He has his Architecture degree from LSU. We lived in Married Student Housing until 1969 when my Dad designed and built a house on..... Beanland Drive. 1313 Beanland Drive to be exact.
A few interesting 1313 Beanland Drive Facts:
Cost of the lot: $1,300
Cost of the house: $13,000
Sides of the house: 13 (looks round)
Approximate Sq Ft: 13xx
Parents Anniversary: Nov 13
Good Luck in Our Family: 13
We lived there until 1973 when we moved into an old house down that gravel road between the Chancelor's house and the Phi Delt House. We had 10 acres including a stream and pond with the biggest loudest bull frogs I have ever heard. We moved to Jackson in 1977. My parents sold it to UM after the DeKE Frat got their charter jerked. The house was torn down in 1987 during my Sophomore year. I could hear the heavy equipment tearing it down from the Sigma Nu house. Depressing! The gravel drive does not even exist anymore.
Here is a pic of 1313 Beanland Drive from one of my Dad's old Architecture Practice brochures. The two crumb snatchers on the trikes are yours truly and my big brother Jace. We even had a dog named Rebel! Good times...
