I purchased a red top optima battery when I installed my winch. Apparently red tops are not designed for a lot of winch use. I killed it when winching 62 to the street. I also had to have a reverse terminal battery for the 100 with the setup I have. I was looking at the yellow top but they do not come in reverse terminals. They have a yellow top 35 model that might fit but lost about 80 CCA from the yellow top 34 model.

What should I run with a winch with decent CCA? I would also like a sealed battery. The last one that was not sealed leaked battery acid every where after the razorback ramble and did a lot of surface damage to frame that I had to paint back.

Was the truck running when you winched it? If not then I can understand the red top situation. Charge it and see what happens. Can't help you on the battery question. Been running the same old red top in the 40 for years.

Good luck with the optimas. I have 2 dead red tops and one dead yellow top that auto zone refused to warranty wthout the proper paperwork. Talk to Chris about the diehard marine that he got its a bad mo-fo.

Jeff is there anything on the purdy truck that is newer than 10 years besides the tires?

I'll see if I can dig out the info on the CarQuest battery I have in my truck. It is not a 'sealed battery' like what you think, but I can hold it upside down and it doesn't leak out. (I actually did hold it upside down to check, trust me) The previous batteries I had in there did and my firewall is paying the price. The one I have is 1050 CCA or something like that, it's massive.

*edit* I either have the biggest Premium 70, or a Heavy Duty/Farm battery. Since my FJ40 is 800 miles north, I can only guess.

Nice Rob! The gas tank, shocks and tires are newer than 10 years. The battery is 4 years old. My experience with red tops in the military is that they are junk on vehicles that aren't driven every day. That being said, my red top in the 40 doesn't see much use. ???

I hate getting back into this whole Optima thing again but I'll just say that I have had nothing but great luck with three yellow tops and less than great luck with two red tops. Them's the facts from my end.

I have red tops and have had not much luck with those. I am still kicking myself for letting the stock panasonic battery go in my 80 when i got the optima. I now run a cheapo wire nut cable connection as my quick disconnect on the red top in my sammy. this has extended its life. i charge the red top in the 80 with a small battery charger that seems to help. when its running its fine. if it sits up more than 4 days it needs a jump.

just get a good battery and you will be fine.

Nolen seems to be getting pretty good service out of his red top. :)

If you are needing to get your headlights not to work and your drivers side door handle permanently removed from the truck to go along with your winch problems, I can recommend a place..

what funny is that you have a winch on your truck....wtf are you going to do with a winch but pull trees out of the yard....poser

Talked with some one at optima, optimajim on mud, he recommended the D27F. Napa exchanged original redtop but I have to keep it. It will go in the red 62 and not sure what I am going to do for a good winch battery. Probably stick with the optima. That battery that leaked did a number on frame. Thanks for all the info. I have been playing in snow with kids all day. We are all beat.

go with sears diehard plat marine.... they are a sealed batt and just down the road from you.

I picked up a plat Sears battery 2 years ago and it crapped out on me in November.
Sears, after they charged it determined it ok. It died within a week and failed our testing.
Gonna take it back again when I have energy to throw away.

Sounds like that may not be the battery to go with either...back to yella optima
