battery tender

Put this in on the weekend.
Found a perfect spot in tucked in front of the left hand side battery. Fits perfectly.
I've got an HDJ81, dual batteries, with the series/parallel solenoid for starting.
Just wondering if it really matters which battery it is connected to?
The solenoid is always in the parallel position (until the key is in the On/start position) so they should be connected properly for the charger to work on either, yes?

Back in the old days when mine was still 24v start....okay not that long ago...but the battery cover that was on the passenger side had some caution note about not hooking up jumper cables to that battery. Not sure if that applies to a charger like that.

I'm pretty sure that's why IanB's truck burn down his garage, I remember reading he had hooked up something to that battery and when u turn your key that battery has 24v.... I could be wrong thou

12v is 12v at the bat. Post anyways. I have jumper cables lapping my radiator with the end and extra cable laying in front of my batteries so I can jump from either battery ,doesn't matter either battery is only 12 volt. Even when my starter was 24v.but for some reason if it was mine I'd be tending to the right (drivers ) battery..

one could easly make a mistake here. for example, the charger could be hooked up to the posts (12 volt) but it may also be grounded through its housing. if you have it hooked up to the postive of the second battery where there is 24 volt, even if the negative is hooked up to the same battery, you may give it 24 volts if its mounted to the body of the vehicle. what is worse is that at that point, you are also grounding/short circuiting the positive of your first battery.

if you want your batteries to last in your 24 volt system, never ever charge one seperately. either charge in series with a 24 volt charger or dissconect them and charge them together in parallel (12 volt). the second you charge one independly of the other, its the beggining of the end. in series, the batteries do not even each other out. they draw/give the same current so if one of them has a higher charge, it will draw less current and therefor the lesser battery will never be fully charged. same goes the other way. if you are drawing current, you can only draw as much as the lesser charged battery.

to even out, just dissconect the batteries from the vehicle and hook them to each other in parallel so they could equilize.

OK my bad yes your correct to always check , electrical is not my strong point ,as a matter of fact I don't have a strong point. But on my rhd 80 sereies the 24 volt switching is down stream I thought on the fender well. I'm using it as a terminal block only now for my two aux.batteries. But even from factory set up my batteries were always able to jump start from either battery, and this was on every 80 series I've had. I've even started the truck after being hooked up. Didn't know the battery was 24 volt during start position, can't believe I never pooched anything.

i am not familiar with the 80 series 24 volt system but its not a big deal if you jump from one battery to another car as long as you only use the posts and not mix things up. they one down fall is that you will discharg one battery and they go out of wack again and that is the begining of the end. you just go through lots of batteries this way.

my record on a pair of batteries is 10 1/2 years and still going so will let you know when they stop working. :D
