Axle rebuild FJ40

I have a 1979 front axle for my FJ40. I need to rebuild it. My understanding is that the axles change after 1-79. How can I figure out if it's a pre-1/79 or a post 1/79? I got the axle for my 1962 FJ40. Any help would be great.

Hogan, your '79 axle will most likely have 3.70 gears in it. The '62 will have 4.10's. That presents a problem. If you still have your original R&P, I think you can swap that out.
The '79+ has the larger, more readily available Birfields, which also came on the Mini Trucks and FJ60's. Good axle, but ratio's are different. I'm in the middle of a knuckle rebuild myself.

I have seen rebuild kits that include both size shims (the only difference I know). The earlier had a small bolt pattern fot the trunion shims, the 79+ has the larger pattern.

The 79 axle I bought had the 3.7 gears, but my 71 pumpkins swapped in.

The pre 79 axle will have a 48mm x 30mm steering arm bolt pattern, the 79 and up will have a 55mm x 30 mm pattern. The 78 and older, 11 mm studs. The 79+, 12 mm studs.

Thanks, I all ready picked up a set of 4.10's. I've had the cruiser for 7 years, and only drove it once. I've been collecting parts for 7 years off and on. I hope to get back on the road next summer.

Pinion flanges will be different and not swappable.

Did you get the Driveshafts too?

That I didn't think of. I may need to get a different flange from Randy's. What I'm dealing with is a franken cruiser. Chevy 350, Turbo 400, and a Dana 20 t-case (my rear 3rd member is in the center of the axle). I do have 79 drive shafs, I'll figure something out I have about 7 to 8 months to think about it.
