Changed out the fuel pump with 200k+ miles with an autozone one only to find out that it was a fuse... (I did not know better). Now the fuel pump is shot. I checked the plug and get 12v+ at start up. I ran the pump directly to the battery and no go....

Is there an external pump alternative? I hate compromising reliability. Or will I have to pay $$$ @ the dealer?

If a new OEM pump costs you $200 and you get 200k out of it that is $0.001 per mile. The $50 parts store pump that craps out at 12k costs you $0.0042 per mile. All numbers are just a guess for the sake of the argument, but the jist is the OEM pays itself back over the longer life and besides that having to drop the tank once a year is bound to be a PITA.

CDan or Sam at Lowe will make you a good deal, I would go OEM and not have to worry about it for another 200k. Not sure about CDan but Sam does 25% off plus free shipping. Check his thread in the vendor section for contact info.

@inkpot, I still have the original in the tool shed. I figure it won't last much more.

Tnx for the info... Ill have to grab one from Dan....

Also, the positive wire @ the pump holder is exposed. Some of the plastic became brittle and fell off the first time. The wire itself is still good. I'm thinking I could use a piece fuel hose sleeved on there. Any thoughts?

Lastly, I did not use a new gasket this last time. I figure this time I should use a new one...?

first off use heat shrink to recover the wire, secondly get a new gasket when you talk to Dan. and think about this gas is explosive but yet you can light a match and throw it in to liquid gas and the flame will be put out, but if the fumes are strong enough there will be an explosion before a flame can be struck on the same match, so if you have an exposed wire that could cause a spark right at a sours that has a lot of gas fumes you do not want to take a chance.

The aftermarket ones are terrible. We've put some in for customers (at their request, even though we warned them against it) and they generally die right around 12 months. We just replaced one in a Lexus the other day for that same reason. Hit up one of your MUD vendors (myself or CDan or whoever) and get yourself a new OEM one. The original lasted 25 years and 200k. Money well spent.

shrink wrap might, you have to buy a heat shrink rated, for the use you intend to use it for. just like the insulation on wire it is rated not to deteriorate with gas or oil. i am sure there is heat shrink rated the same way, do they sell it at autozone i do not know.

You can use the pump from a Honda Accord. Also in my recent project (99 4runne) I dumped the Autozone pump for a Denso from Global automotive in Miami.

Ok... almost done with the 60. Will be doing this next. Thinking about pulling the old OEM to get the smog done. Once that is done, I can begin to do the full OEM replacement plus, the transmission rebuild.

Ok. So I found my, still working, oem pump. Im gonna put it in just in time to smog it before the new year/new smog laws go into play. And yeah, I checked the warranty and it was a little over a year and a half.
Once I get the money, I plan on getting an oem pump and go from there.

In the mean time heres my problem/solution. The hot wire that goes to the pump is in a bit of trouble. The plastic wire cover is brittle and is showing signs where its breaking. I doubt it will last much longer and don't want to risk an explosion. So I'm thinking of either a new one or "sleeving" it with a piece of fuel hose. The doubt of a new wire is that the plastic might not hold up to the fuel. But the fuel hose will even though submerged in fuel from time to time. What are your thoughts?

Oh and it was an oriely pump. Not an AutoZone one but they both suck none the less.

Thhn????

The wire wraps around the metal and is insulated. The insulation is showing signs of being brittle. The wire itself is good. So running the fuel hose will guarantee protection against any power wire coming in contact with the grounded metal housing.
