automatic tranny problem

Mike,
Drop your pan back down and make sure the filter didn't fall off. It might also not be sealing properly to the pick up tube. I suspect something like that happened.

Also, an auto tranny must be chacked with the engine running to get a proper reading.

ok i pulled the pan again to see whats going on, prob is i dunno what to look for. when i pulled the pan the fluid was still very clean no evidence of shedded metal so thats good.
how loose should the filter be? or how loose whoulf the pipe the filter connects be?
heres a few pics not that it will do much good.

also do u guys use silicon to seal ut tranny pana along with the gasket
i heard the parts guy say u should never do that on a tranny.

I did not when I did my dads bronco, it was a rubber gasket, if it was a cork gasket I might use Ultra Copper RTV.

The filter should firmly snap on the pickup tube, if it is not firmly attached then the pump will suck air, not ATF and you have problems just like you described.

I would reassemble, being sure than the filter is firmly attached and sealed, and see what happens.

well the filter in this has a rubber ring that the pip slips into and the a hole near the center where a bolt goes to hold it in place it seems to be that the bolt wont go in enough to snug the filter completly. the filter stays there but it has some movement to it. this might be the problem. i hate to re seal everything and find out it doesnt work though.

Bailey's right; if the filter wasn't tight and you were sucking air, your converter could be bad. But; if the converter took a s***, you'd know when you dropped the pan; you'd see ground up aluminum all over the place. (Just saw that today, in fact in a Caravan...the filter ring was cut and it was airing up).

I hate to say it man; but from the sounds of your problem combined with the little bit you know, it may be a good thing (and a learning experience) to get it to a shop ASAP before you really fxxx something up.

the valve all the way to the right (in yer pic) is for the shifter. make sure its moving as you run it thru the gears. it sounds like it may be low on fluid. check it while running in park.

I've got a Yukon you need to ride in. Art Carr can build a 700R4 that will put the power through.....1st to 2nd shifting manually (manual valve body) it not only rips the tires, but it'll pretty much get you ready for your next chiropractic visit.


And GM makes a LOT of transmissions.

My 3sp worn out F motor 40 will smoke 33's on wet pavement.

a transmission that has to have most components replaced or reinforced to work well is not a good transmission in my mind.

My family has never had a 4l60E-transmissioned vehicle that has been able to make 150k on one tranny. (3 in total) I've had one with 75k go out on me just drivin down the highway.
