for any one who knows anything about autos i need help.
i have a th400 and i was just getting ready to drive the cruiser when i put it in gear nothing happend. the engine is running fine at idol and no sound change when i put it in gear. so i try reverse and nothing i try everything and i get nothing. i havent done anything to the tranny at all. i pulled the pan on the tranny to replace the pan gasket but other then that nothing. i took the linkage off and put it in each gear (ie drive, reverse, and such) and the cruiser will roll forward no matter what position its in? what in the world could be the problem?

any and i mean any help would be apreciated.

mike

REAL STUPID QUESTION BUT... Did you put tranny fluid back in it? I think it will do just that without fluid.

You said you took the linkage apart, how much did you take it apart? Was anything disconnected before you did so? Did you reconnect the ENTIRE linkage path?
Like Nailbender said, make sure there is fluid in the beast.
Broken band maybe?

right after i reseald the pan i replaced the fluid so its full. i took the linkage off completly to the point where i was turning just the nut that shifts the tranny. so im almost positive what ever it is is in the tranny?

thanks mike

Was it working okay before you changed the fluid?
I've heard, never experienced myself, that the friction material in hard-working trannies which have never had their fluid changed will sometimes not work after a fluid change. Reason being that the friction material from the clutch packs and/or bands wears off and takes up residence in the tranny fluid. The tranny then becomes dependent on the friction material floating in the fluid in order to work. When the gritty fluid material is removed the clutches no longer have anything with which to act upon the steels. Maybe someone else here can comment on this.

maybe however the tranny has maybe 8 miles on it . its a complelty rebuild tranny the gasket was leaking so i drained it and replaced it it was fine before hand so this is a new one ot me. ive never heard of something like this before.

thanks again mike

If it's a fresh rebuid there is the possibility that something in the rebuild process went wrong. There's lots of small things that could have gone wrong (eg. a band off its anchor, etc.)
Are all the bolts connecting the flywheel to the torque converter secure and in place?

bolt are all there i just tryed it again i shifted while the motor was running to drive and then reverse. then i went to go back to park and i hear a real fast sounding grinding high pitched. it wasnt for very long since i was listening carfully for anything but non the less. any ideas now? im done trying to fix it for now. i hate to have to take this to a shop the thing hasnt been running in 3 years the tranny was rebuilt 3 years ago and i have drivin it home about a year ago short drive things worked fine then now all the sudden im lost?

mike

I'd say take it to a shop and have them listen to it, or just go in and describe your symptoms. If you're getting buzzing noises then you're probably looking at an internal issue of some sort. The noise you described might have been the parking pawl falling into place. If so, that still isn't your problem. You might want to do a Google search to locate a TH400 (or a general auto trans.) trouble shooting page.

If the tranny was grinding when you put it in park, I'd say you knocked the transfer case into nuetral.
If that isn't it and if it's moving back and forth, then it is that or something broken between the output shaft and the input drum. That ain't good.

If not, you need to make sure the trans is to the full mark with the engine running. Low fluid would cause it not to run.

If your transfer case wasn't in neutral, I'd say you've either got the wrong output shaft, or a bad torque converter (possible slid off the pump gear...but sounds like you haven't driven it too much).

If the shop didn't put the right output shaft in it, you aren't going anywhere.

Ummm not that this happened to me(it did) but it turned out I knocked the dash lever for the t-case into nutral, just a bit, by looking you couldn't tell........but I put it in low and what do you know.....it moved, back into high and yep.......all was fine.

My students are always climbing around in my trucks. The first couple of times I hopped in one to drive it home and it displayed the exact same symptoms it took me a while checking all kinds of stuff before I noticed they were playing with the "funny little lever" and left it in neutral.

ok did that and low and behold it was in netural. but the problem still isnt fixed. i put more fluid in so its not a little above full. the engine starts fine runs at idol. i put in drive and nothing happens i try reverse nothing. however when i push the cruiser in park it wont move like it should so its working at least in the park position. 1 or 2 times when i shifted to drive i heard the drive shaft clunk like i used to do right before it moves but nothing happend and i never moved. this is by far one of the most nerve racking problems yet.

thanks
mike

well i didnt check the level while running. i just topped off the tranny before i tried everything again to see if it didnt anything diff. what else could there be? its no linkage its not fluid, its not transfercase. man i really dont have the money to take it to a shop.

thanks for all your help

Mike;

where are you at? I've got a very close friend who owns a tranny shop. Have you verified your output shaft is the right one? Be sure of it.

Also, you'd be surprised what a slipped converter can do. Your problem is before your transfer case in the line-up; and rests in your transmission. For it to be anything else you would have additional symptoms.

Check on the output shaft, check your converter. How far from Pensacola, FL are you?

If the rebuilder fawked up, he fawked up, and its not money out of your pocket.

People keep suggesting the same thing, and you keep ignoring them, and then wonder why its so confusing.

TAKE IT TO A SHOP THAT KNOWS TRANSMISSIONS! Most will give you an opinion for free, then take it to the rebuilder that did it.

TJDVI im in arizona so im kinda far from there the tranny has worked before (i.e i drove it home things worked fine) so im sure the shafts are right. the converter seems fine to me but i will look again tomarrow

CrisinGA im not exactly sure what u mean by ignoring what the people here say, if i was ignoring them then i wouldnt have tried anything now would I.
I didnt pay for the rebuild it was a trade of sorts and it was 3 years ago so its not as simple as you make it sound.
