cool 4wd

While attending some training on a local military base I saw this great old Jeep parked between a couple of old tanks. I asked about it and the best they could say was it's either going to be restored as a static display or it's been forgotten about....Got to love the split windshield for a gun port!

Thule/Yakima Topper Problems

I have this Thule cargo topper from my old camper and am planning on putting it on the 60 for the OzTent, but was curious if anyone has had any problems with them coming loose, shifting or snagging on trees while off-road. If so, how did you re-enforce it?

Thanks.

Thanks guys.

Any thoughts on the cargo carrier issue?

I would say it as its not a good size tree branch you will be ok. I put the largest yakima box on mine with the bars and I have drove it quite a bit on the highway and on some good bumpy and mine hasn't moved. But If i plan on wheeling it hard I will probably take mine off.

Matt-

Hope you're doing well! Thanks for the advice...I'll keep my eye open for those big branches!

Britklr, for a KLR rider you are not afraid to spend some cash on your cruiser. Y'all are so notoriously cheap! ;)

Who woulda thought?

Gorgeous cruiser. Really nicely done.

You frequent Advrider.com?

Gotta love the KLR...It's a tough bike...I've spent a little ($$$) on it (LOL) and have done several "Lap of Pikes Peak" runs from Kansas City. Done some living/camping off the back of it and would do it more often but they're not many in my area that like the idea of riding a KLR for 2200 miles with all your gear on it.

I've been on AdvRider, but enjoy the MUD crowd a lot more

Well if your gonna mess it up this stuff can fix it... Thule directly suggests this stuff btw. Or you can slap a patch on the front of the box to make it a HD version....

Rec'Repair

Would have saved a family member of mine from kissing a nice covered bridge! Oh good ole Vermont!

Good to know....thanks for the info.

Chirp Noise??

I haven't done a lot of driving with the 60 this year so most of my driving is around town, but I've noticed a "chirping/squealing" noise coming from the area of the throwout bearing/transmission so I'm looking for some advice.

The weird thing about the noise is it only happens when the outside temperature is above 90 degrees and the truck is up to temp. If the weather is in the 70's or 80's no chirp. When the truck is started and idles no chirping.

The noise occurs when sitting at a stoplight, out of gear and my is foot off the clutch. Depress the clutch slightly and the chirping disappears....but once you drive for a short distance you can hear a faint chirping/squealing from the same area...

The whole driveline is new within the last 4000 miles: H55, Clutch assembly, OEM throw out bearing, re-built transfercase, balanced DS, New u-joints, etc...

No water crossings, but a lot of dust in Moab a year ago, so the only thing I can think of is the throwout bearing is going out. The only problem I have with that is that I hear the chirp/squeak when driving when the T/O shouldn't be touching the pressure plate...Right?....Thanks for your advice.

I pulled the transmission inspection cover and checked the T/O bearing and everything looked new and clean. Once it was running and warmed up the chirping started. When you depressed the clutch it stopped. I guess my only question is should the T/O bearing be touching the pressure plate forks and be spinning the entire time? If not, is there any adjustment?

Thanks.

This is a good thread on that. https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/148181-throw-out-touching-pressure-plate-idle.html

It's difficult to get the later model slave cylinder's to not push the throwout bearing up against the clutch. The earlier trucks had an adjustable slave rod I think.

Bryan-

Thanks for the link. That answers a lot of questions. I'll tinker with the pedal adjustment, if that doesn't help I'll look at fabbing up a bracket and return spring.

Both of my cruisers are running the late model slave and they are self adjusting which why it don't need a spring. I'm pretty sure mine just ride on the fingers. How old is your slave? And no not brian's age lol

Hey Matt-

I replaced the Master, Slave and Hydraulic hose maybe a year ago...I'm going to looking at my old Slave and see if there's any difference.

Thanks!
