I've searched the internet and read threads about various winches, but I'm mounting an ARB to my 80 in a few weeks and I'm wondering what winch will give me the best 'bang-for-my-buck'? I would like a 9.5k to 12.5k capability. Will the Summit / T-Max 12.5 bolt right up to the ARB? Is WARN the way to go? Also, I'm looking for a winch that requires little / to no mods to the ARB. Suggestions?

Lastly, should I get 1" spacers up front to recover from front end sag syndrome from the added weight?

I would go for the Warn 12K.These trucks are Heavy&w/ 5-16th.
cable you have no worries. It will be a tight fit,my friend has a 12K
on his 93 w/an Arb bumper&we have used his quite a few times.
Not sure about the mounting kit.
4wheelparts has some good prices on the Warn's,they say $19 ship price.I think the 12K is like $1253.I want to find a used one.

Ps I would go for the 1" spacers up front, the 12K's are heavy.
I got my spacers from Slee,PITA to install w/the J's.Also the dual batt. mod to consider if you have a fridge or more accessories.
Or just get the dual post batt.to install winch.

I think Slee's site tells which winches fit and which winches require mods like a mounting plate/ fit kit. I think its the 8000 and 12000 that fit. :)

Thanks for the feedback...man, winches can get expensive! Hell, I'm in deep already with this Land Cruiser 'build-up illness'. I might not have purchased had I known the seriousness of the disease...kinda like a CRACK addiction. Anyways, has anyone seen any smokin' deals on Warn winches lately? Or anyone have any buying strategies? I'm leaning towards the Warn M8000 OR XD9000...

9.5XP seems like a sweet winch purchase to me. Unfortunately, it is probably too new to find a used one out there...

Just installed the Warn M12000 this weekend. Two drilled 1/2 inch holes in the fairlead to line up to the existing holes in the ARB bumper and it fits right in.

Winch Depot (4WheelParts) has the Warn M12000 for $1058, free shipping. Tax if they are in your state. Best deal I found. They aren't the swiftest on shipping, but it got here - all 136 lbs of it. I had great help lifting it into place (two guys lifting) and it went very quickly.

At first I thought I wanted the biggest winch I could accomodate & afford. Now, I'm wondering if I need that much...I'm not mud bogging anymore and I don't want any additional unneeded weight. I just want a medium-to-heavy duty winch for trail situations and pulling other out of trouble. Hell, I'm more confused now!

If the Warn 9.5XP is good enough for slee then it is good enough for me.
8000 not enough, 12 too much.
Woody ways the 12k Tmax is good as well

IMO unless you are getting stuck in the mudd or some deep snow, there is no need for a 12K. 8K should be enough, and if you have any doubts just by a pulley for 50 bucks, it will just about double the working capacity of the winch. Save the 500 additional dollars unless you are going to really use it or come across a cheap 12K in good condition.

I love over kill on my rig (thicker steel, d-rings, etc) but not went it's going to cost me $500, I could spend on other goodies, i.e. a digital dual battery setup with ALL the parts including the Optima.

That's my plan, and would love to here what others think.
(thnx to alvaro for the logic behind the theory)

PKP80...understood

big thread on how much winch is needed for an 80 recently

I ended up getting an M12 but it was cuz the deal was too good to pass. Had actually decided on a 9.5XP (I like the 6HP motor).

And yes, an 8 or 9K with a snatch block and a synth extension is still less than a 12K.

Still, a used M12 in good condition for the same price as a new 9.5 is a good way to go in my book...

Warn 8274

I'm putting an 8000lb rated Warn 8274 on my 80. It is the toughest winch made, even though it says 8000 I've seen them drag lifted full size truck out of the mud. This is a fast, super strong winch. Plus I picked mine up for $40 about 6 years ago and plan on running it the rest of my life.

FWIW: the T-max bolt pattern is the same as many warn winches, including the M8000.

For a good read on how to choose which winch rating please read: THIS

After reading the above I am/ was convinced the 12,500 lb was for me.

I just pulled the trigger on a used M12000...its about 5-6 yrs old and works great I'm told. I was told it could use a paint job if it was going to be visible, but it won't be seen behind the ARB! I'm just starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel for my rig's build-up...thanks for all the feedback.

can't go wrong with a good M12!
