thanks for the pic. I may be mistaken, but that might look like what's already under my fridge. I was thinking of feet that you have to
install yourself. Am I correct to assume that you didn't have to install those feet yourself?
Yes, only corner protectors and those shown in pictures do not need to be installed yourself. There was nothing i had to install myself with my VL45.

@Patassa I opened mine up today and these things are pretty simple, i don't imagine that there is anything in there that could fail when out of warranty, that would justify replacing the entire unit.

About 2 hours in, i also linked the video at the right time. I will make shorter clips and get pics later.

@Miloslavich i will get you pictures, but the gidst is that its very simple; i've never looked in a fridge before and was able to identify every wire and component. You have your temp sensor, compressor, cables running to each control (temp, batt voltage, compressor speed and etc), fuse, ac/dc power, your power to led lights, and a condensor core (the thing i kept calling the radiator lol). That's everything and can be accessed by removing the panel where the controls are. Like you said, this is something we can figure out how to repair easily if needed. I'm sure you can ask here and someone will help you figure out how to fix it yourself.

@wlittleman not sure who it was, but someone else had that happen and contacted Lu and he gave them a free T Shirt and a Insulated Bag. Idk probably worth a shot to text him at the number on their site.

Real talk, are we just buying chinese knock off junk to save a few hundred dollars today but will be upgrading in a few years to something else? Bc, if so, I'd rather buy once and be done with this. Help me out, fellas. I get that the compressor is the same, but that's just a component, how it's integrated into the unit and the other controls are probably what would fail.

Sort answer is "that is yet to be seen." It's a real possibility. That said, I did a fair amount of research before jumping on the wagon here. Here's the thread I created on another forum: The 12v Fridge/Freezer Thread

Dometic, Engel and ARB seem to be the "big dogs" in the overland fridge/freezer game. That said, it seems like there are a LOT of other companies that are getting into (or have been in) the game. The more I researched different brands, the more I realized they were pretty much a variation of a half dozen designs. Engel uses a swing compressor, and I believe Dometic uses their own compressor. The rest of the best rated (Including ARB) use the Danfoss a.k.a. SECOP compressor and a handful that get labeled as "best value" run a chinese knockoff copy of the SECOP. The compressor being the most critical part, I wanted to spend a few extra bucks and make sure that I have that compressor.

Another value brand that the "van life" people on YouTube seem to love is Alpicool. I just couldn't bring myself to get behind that one though. The name, compressor, and price tag kept me from being able to cheap out that much.

In the end, I went with the JP40. It seems to be the "Indel B" fridge and just rebranded. It's a tried and true design and compressor and has been around for quite a while. Sure, it isn't the sexiest design, but they haven't changed it much (if any) over the years because it just works. So I figured it was worth taking a shot. In fact, I was about to pull the trigger on the Black Forest 31FF at $350 with no bag before finding this group buy. Less than $50 difference for a larger size and insulated bag included. Score!

As for the other designs offered by ICECO, I can't speak to them. But if they use the same compressor and similar insulation, I don't see how they could be any less reliable.

your iPhone is made in china.

your Android is likely too.

90% of chinese made goods are garbage. some are not bad.

final thoughts- this is a simple device with a good compressor. if something breaks and they no longer exist or refuse to warranty it, any cruiser owner who does their mechanical work could repair or fix one of these. if not, perhaps they could have it repaired by a competent HVAC or appliance repairman. I did my research and gave one of these a shot. If it fails on me and is not repairable, lesson learned.

Pretty much this.

I opened the box to my VL60 Dual Zone today. I was totally excited. The unit was really quite stunning to look at considering how plain it looks in photos. But, as I unboxed it, I discovered a pretty good sized dent. The first thing I thought was...can I live with it? But, as I looked more carefully, I found more damage. I found one of the top corner pieces cracked and severely marred. Needless to say, I was totally bummed. I reinspected the box, and found that the box looks pretty wrinkled where the damage to the fridge occurred.

What was more appalling are the bold warning labels outside the box that indicated; "Handle with care. This side up. Do not drop". But, in the end, that bold printing appeared to have pissed off the delivery people enough for him/her/them to turn it upside down and drop it on its corner. WTF! Reminds me of that opening scene from Ace Ventura Pet Detective

This is pretty much why I went with the JP over the VL. I figured the plastic body would hold up better long term against damage. You are not the first that this has happened to. I think I read on Amazon review that someone got a partial refund due to shipping damage. In the end, that sucks, but doesn't impact the performance of the fridge. There is a good chance that kind of damage was going to be done by you with years of use anyway. See if you can get a partial refund and enjoy your killer deal of a fridge. You also won't be mad when you put your first ding in it.

I'm not downplaying it. That royally sucks and we'd all be pissed. That said, it isn't the end of the world. I hope they are able to make you a happy customer. Please keep us apprised of the outcome.

If there's one thing that I've seen that ICECO really needs to improve is the packaging on the VL series. Or maybe start getting insurance on the packages so that someone (the buyer) can claim a total loss and get the value of the fridge refunded?

I had some damage to mine as well, same fridge. Not quite as extensive as yours but the carrier definitely dropped it. Lu sent me a new panel (compressor panel was bashed in) and refunded me $50 bucks on a fridge that was already a smoking deal in my opinion. I replaced the panel, bought a bunch of beer with my new found money, and realized like @CowboyTaco said that I wouldn be pissed when my first dent got put in it (which happened last night when my bike stand fell over :bang:

I’m about to go live to test/ work on group buy stuff, but I was told icoolers and expandable are discounted now via the “MUDFORUMBUY” code. @CowboyTaco will respond to you soon as I’m live bud. Looks good so far but I’d recommend keeping initial post as brief as possible. I will hopefully have a TacomaWorld version of price list to get you today. Thanks and stop by the live stream anytime if you want a quick response! Twitch.tv/sharpecat

Will report back here soon as I confirm code works. I’m grabbing a coffee then I’ll go live within 30 mins.

Jk. I can’t wait that long.

Confirmed for iCooler and expandable. I only tested 1 color and the 52L but it does work. Will test the rest on stream as I update price list.

I could probably live with the dent, but the corner was obliterated. It even has sharp edges that can leave a cut on you if you brush it with your arm or leg. The condition of the fridge is just unacceptable especially considering most of you guys got brand new immaculate fridges, and I got something that looks used and abused. If these fridges get that easily damaged by carriers, then Iceco should require that we pay for shipping insurance. Look closely at this damage...I don't even know how you can do that unless you used a special shaped hammer. A $50 partial refund still wouldn't feel right at all.

I’ll look into whether or not the corner piece is replaceable, if not then I know the entire lid comes off easy and maybe that can be replaced. Have you tried texting Lu about this? Maybe a lid replacement ?

I'm in communication with someone from Iceco, but they aren't including their name. I told them I could live with the dent, but not the obliterated corner. I agree that the lid would be very easy to replace, and a reasonable person could live with that.

Maybe suggest it to them and keep us posted. Hope you get it sorted out brother and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Hi all. I got my fridge (VL60) and have a couple comment / questions

Comments / experience so far
1) Thanks again to @SharpeCat for organizing the group buy
2) There was minor shipping damage to one of the black bumpers and access panel. ICECO promptly refunded $30. I was able to fix with some pliers so you can hardly tell there was any damage
3) The insulated bag was missing. Again they promptly responded and mailed it out to me. Happy with customer service, which is important

Questions:
1) The instructions say that the fridge should not be operated at 12V when the battery is being charged. I plan to use in my camper and am wondering how this works in reality... I would like to have my trailer plugged in when at the campsite to keep the battery topped off, but then would not be able to have the fridge plugged in. Am I supposed to switch to 120V for the fridge and separately charge the trailer battery? What if I'm running on solar??? Seemed like a strange statement in the manual. Is this common for all 12V fridges?
2) I just plugged in for the first time today and am monitoring the temps. Started at ambient 80F. On battery and ECO mode it cooled down to 34F in the first hour and then an hour later was at 45F. The setting is at 41F. Is this hysteresis normal?

Thanks for any experience/insight.

Thanks for the insight bud, as well as for your order and patience.

2 hours to get to 45 from 80 seems normal. You mean cooled down to 54 in first hour and not 34? If so then that seems good.

I have not used my 12V so I’m hoping someone else could chime in. Maybe you could just try and see what happens? On my Jackery it will not let me use the 12V/DC while the Jackery is charging itself via AC, but i can still use AC output when charging via AC.

Maybe they mean do not use DC and AC at same time? I’m confused too, as I have plugged it into the cigarette lighter briefly before with no issues when car was on, and that is the same as using DC/12V while charging battery (since car being on means battery is being charged, but charged via 12V/DC).

@SharpeCat any info from your contact regarding the JP slides? I was in the process of buying and the code doesn’t discount those. Site doesn’t say they are out of stock or anything. I know someone else asked about this also. Thanks.

Are you including the power consumption from when it had to bring it from ambient temp to zero, and totalling that in with first 24 hours? I did mine in separate tests to get an initial consumption reading, as well as a sustained consumption reading. My sustained consumption at 32F and ambient temp of ~80 is about 480 watt hours per 24 hour period, and yours is not far from double that. I'm trying to figure out if it is because you are testing it at 0 and not 32, or if it is because you are including initial (first run) power consumption into your total. With the bag vs me having no bag, i would think that your sustained would be better than mine is why i asked. Let me know what the day 2 total is if you plan on having it plugged in for a while, thanks!
Yes it was from start up so the fridge was warm. It took 90 minutes of full run time to get to 0 and I kept it on 0 for that 750 watt usage. I've been recharging the yeti so I don't have accurate 32 deg numbers just yet but will circle back.

Nothing yet, I assume they are out of stock. Last I heard all of the JPs are low in stock so I would not hold my breath on those. I will keep everyone updated if I hear anything different.

That is an odd statement, and one that I would personally ignore. How are you to know when the battery is charging (assuming you are using energy from the car/truck battery)? I would just plug it in and go.

A variance in temp of 4 degrees is normal. If you want something to stay frozen, set the temp to at least 28. That'll give you a temp range of 24-32 degrees. If you want to keep things from freezing, set it up to like 37 so that the range will be 33-41 degrees. Temperature is more easily regulated when the fridge is full as opposed to empty.

If the temp was set at 41, I'm surprised that it went down to 34 as that is greater than a 4 degree variance.

@CowboyTaco The temperature stabilized after the first couple hours and is now within the +/-4. It is also empty so you're probably right.

On page 5 of the manual is says "Note: A battery charger may only be connected to the battery when the Fridge/Freeze has been disconnected from the DC source." Seems strange.

I assume they mean an AC charger shouldn’t be used while you are drawing power from battery via DC. You’re fine with your car though since it’s DC. I wouldn’t worry about it and my guess is it’s there for people in other countries who use this in their homes/AC to charge.

Sorry about the procrastination boys, am live and finalizing price sheet right now. Will edit this post with current list as well as first post of thread here shortly. @CowboyTaco will have a draft for the tacomaworld version of price list for you to look at today, let me know if you'd like any changes/to personalize it for tacoma world. Twitch.tv/sharpecat is stream and i will be keeping an eye on chat in case anyone stops by with any questions.

Thanks for the patience everyone, as well as for all the help so far. Much appreciated.
