Anyone else skipped at red lights in their 80?

Be careful! Some cities are now enacting laws to make it illegal to have these in a vehicle (other than emergency vehicles).

When they put up a gate at my favorite beach, I used to carry a can to set on the sensor on the other side to lift the gate. If you think you're straddling the sensor and the frame is too high, why not try to put a diff over the sensor?

Traffic signal sensors are basically MADs (magnetic anomoly detectors) buried in the road. There is a wire/coil underground that forms an inductive loop. When a car or truck goes over the loop, it disturbs the RF field that's generated and sends a signal to the traffic control system. All that's required is a large mass of metal.

Now that's what I love about this site. No matter what the subject, there's always somebody around that can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about it.

.. ahh ya see der Norm... what you have here is your basic magnetic anomoly detectors...

Thanks for the insite der Cliffy.. :D

With a motorcycle I always stopped so the frame of the bike was close to the buried wire. If it didn't trigger the light then lay the bike over towards the wire to provide more surface area. I would think a similar strategy for the Land Cruiser would be to have the tire just to the outside of the wire so that the steel of the knuckle which is closest to the ground will influence the sensor.

Guys,

I llike the MRIT thing...are people really using these things to the point where legislation against them is beginning? In my area, there's a flood light that comes on whenever an EMS vehicle is about to aproach the intersection with the sirens and lights blaring. If one were to use the MRIT gizmo, I assume this will cause the same flood light to come one, signifying that an EMS vehicle is approaching?

THROW THE WHEEL!!!!!!!!!!!

Any looooonnnnggg time LCML listers may recognize that phrase...

Someone said that their rig was so tall that they had these problems too. So, their solution was to have an old 15" steel wheel on a heavy chain that the passenger could "throw overboard" to trigger the sensor and then hoist back up.

My wife thinks I'm nuts or just schitzo when we don't trigger the sensor and I holler "Throw the wheel!!". She doesn't get it.

...Fire dept here can change lights on approach , but not the EMS dept . Where's the fun in driving code 4 to a call if it's red carpet all the friggin way ... ::) ::) :P I pity the fawker that decides he's going to try and change lights for his own needs .

But I think we're all missing the point here . We all spend way more time driving thru the city streets , so doesn't it make sense that we sell off our lifts and suspension upgrades , so we can install some Toxic lowering kits and enjoy short light-waits ;)

Or better yet , install a cheech and chong hydraulic thingy - far out mannn !! :P

...Considering it for a while . Not sure how the old bitties in this condo development would take it though !

Funny - I have the opposite problem - Here in WA, there are sensors on the freeway to detect commercial trucks. Trigger it, and a reader board sign will tell you that the scales are open or cloased and to pull in.

I am not especially high (lifted with OEM rack), but something about my 80 makes it happen almost every time.

That's the saddest looking sack I've ever seen :D.

EMS (or just FD?) use the light controllers here as well. I should hope that it's illegal for others to use them, what a fricken mess if you get all sorts of people using them....I would agree that if the police here ever determined you were using one the would have your <see link noted above>
