Anyone done Tundra brakes on a early Solid Axle.

This is a very attractive option for me, I may go for it. My old front rotors are junk anyway, and the calipers aren't much better. I already have IFS hubs installed, and I have access to a lathe to do the minor machine work required. I'm also upgrading to 16" wheels from a 2000 4Runner (already purchased). I've also already done the 1" mc upgrade.

Very interested...

Thanks, so you are running the ifs hubs on your SA, correct? Do your rotors bolt on the back of the hub like the IFS or drop over the front and get sandwiched between the wheel and hub? Got a picture of your setup?

yep, ifs hubs on a solid axle with 02 4runner rotors and calipers with the fror kit. the rotor is between the hub and rim. I don't have a pic, but can get one this weekend

Do it. Document and write up. Post on MUD.

Yes, please do so I can copy you when I build my axle this winter/spring :-). And if you don't I will, but won't be able to get any miles on it until I can get the SAS lined up.

I had planned on doing the Tundra brake swap to my solid axle, but had a wicked deal on 2000 4runner 16" brakes fall in my lap so I used those instead. The swap is really easy to do, an the braking power is extremely good on my truck with 37's. I would only go with tundra brakes if you run a really heavy truck/ 4runner. I know the 4runner brakes stop my truck way faster then when it was stock, even when loaded with about 1000lbs in the box.

You can use the Tundra brakes (6lug) on our Tacoma Brake Mount Kit. The rotors are almost a full inch bigger than the Tacoma rotors, and substantially thicker. To give you a good idea, Tacoma rotor we checked weighed 13lbs, and the Tundra was a whopping 20! The caliper are much larger as well!

Crap. Totally forgot about this. Already have the FJ60 rotors bought and painted, and the V6 calipers bought, all ready to be installed.

Dammit.

I still have my axle to build as well. I need to get my motor project up and going, then maybe I can revisit this myself.

Lots of irons in the fire right now. Anyone know anything about a Massey Ferguson? :hillbilly:

I have an '85 solid axle. We're looking at buying All-Pro's brake lines, the parking brake kit, FJ80 brake master cylinder, along with their rear Disc Brake Kit. But it looks like we need FROR's Tacoma brake mount kit to do it perfect. Are Tundra brakes definitively better than Tacoma brakes? My truck weighs 5500 lbs.

Will anything be tricky with the stock '85 solid axle? Where should I be looking on, assumingly, Rock Auto for this stuff?

MST3K, The Tundra rotors are significantly thicker than the Tacoma or 4Runner rotors but are pretty much identical in diameter I believe. I sourced my rotors from autoanything, and I generally get my calipers from NAPA. My preference is that or OEM for the calipers.

I have been reading and one thing to remember is that there are two Tundra calipers. 199mm(13WE) and 231mm(13WL). Both use the same rotor, but the 231s have larger pistons and pads, BUT they are considerably larger overall and you will have to be careful what wheels that you run with them.

For my purposes I think the 199s will suit me just fine and I do not want to grind the calipers and REFUSE to grind on a wheel, and since I am running the split 3's and would like to continue to, the 231s are out without a spacer and if I am going to run the IFS hubs for width, then why would I want to add a spacer to clear a caliper.

I am sourcing some IFS hubs to have turned down to fit inside the tundra rotors. I am trying to get a parts list together for this right now. I will definitely post details up, or may start a new thread to document the parts and the process.
