Anybody out there have experience with one of these? Trying to find ways to make some cooler weather camping a bit more comfortable for the :princess:

This is the Coleman BlackCat heater, I like the size and BTU output. If you have used it, would you let me know the size of the tent you have?

Thanks! :thumb:

I used the Procat, same BTU but with a fan, in a 9' x 9' 6' tall tent.
Not real extreme weather but a little frost on the ground in the mornings.
It warmed the tent up in a couple of minutes. We only ran it for a bit in the morning to warm things up while we got dressed.

X2. It however was too smelly for us in the king size Overland RTT.

Thanks again for the loan, it made things better for :princess:. Our tent was big enough and drafty enough that the smell wasn't a big issue for the short time we ran it. I can see where in a smaller tent it might be a problem. One of the reasons I have reservations about the Xtremecat.

BTW Alvaro and Ali used the Black cat heaters around camp to warm up on the Rubicon last month. It was raining and we saw some snow on that trip. IMHO they are worth it just to use for that purpose.
I will be buying one of some description for :princess:, just not sure which one.

No problemo...glad to do it. We used it in the big Eureka (10'x14') last year at SnT and it was really nice to have it! And yes in the big Eureka we didn't seem to notice the smell.

Thanks!

We are looking for something to take the bite out of getting in and out of the tent, like before bed and once we get up in the morning... not running all night, I can't believe that can be good.

FYI: I tested a 12V blanket in the Maggiolina this past weekend. It's 120W so it'll take down even the two Lifelines if you're not careful ;). But it's actually a queen size with 2-separate temp adjusters so by using one side when solo it only uses 60W 12V. So I would turn it on high for about an hour before climbing in. Pretty nice to have the bottom side of the sleeping bag, mattress very warm! Then if you're lazy in the A.M. you can turn it back on for an hour or so to warm up. Next outing I think I'll just use a comforter and leave the rheostat at about 50% all night...

Obviously not a room heater but worked well for its intended use.

I have that same Coleman. Works well in my 7x10 Springbar tent. However, I did just buy a Mr. Buddy, which puts out a bit more heat.

I bought this when we tent camped, still use it in the camper if I am boodocking in cooler temps.

I use the same thing and it's quite nice. It'll easily heat up my camper tent and no smell that I detected.

I saw the same exact things being used as room heaters in a lodge I checked out near Moab. Every room has one of these things connected to a central propane tank and mounted on the wall. Those rooms gotta be at least 12'x12' I'd guess.

Wasn't the heater you were using to warm up around camp on the Rubicon the same as the one in the OP?
Did you use it in your tent on that trip as well?

I use the buddy heater in my small tent trailer. it will cook me out on high and keep it mice and toasty on low. I just wish it had thermostat control so I could set it and leave it on all night. I just turn it down to pilot and it works good. seems more stable than the coleman one.

That wasn't mine, belonged to Snook! But Snook and Alvaro had similar style heaters on the Rubi trip.

The thing with the Coleman heaters is that you must use a 1lb bottle for them to stand up. I tend to use a bulk propane tank for all of my propane appliances so Mr. Buddy works out well for me using just a hose. At least, I like the option of using the bulk tank if needed for a longer duration. Something to think about....

Good point. I like the bulk tanks too.

Although I think:princess: would like having a heater she could Use around camp to take the chill off. Like you guys did. Mrs. Chicago sure appreciated using Snooks.

I've got one I use in a 10x10 Eureka dome tent. Takes the chill off ok. Useless in near freezing temps tho.
