Because they "ask" for it...that is why...

And to answer your question about having a loud horn...I keep forgetting you have only been able to drive for a couple years...well at SOME point you will be in a situation where you REALLY need to get the attention of another driver.

It could be in town driving and someone starts to pull out in front of you...or if they change lanes "on top of you", you use your horn to alert them of your presence. It is also highly effective on the highway...mainly for lane change situations. On either occasion the application of the horn can also be used in conjunction with the physiological movement of the extension of the middle finger. Therefore the theory  behind having a horn as loud as "all get out" is when you increase the loudness of the horn the rate (in time) at which the person who's attention you are attempting to get, inversely proportionate. This can be show in a formula also: L= 1/T where L = Loudness of the horn, T = time it takes to get their attention.

There is also times at which the horn can be used for "friendly" attention getting situation. Say you might see someone you know and want them to look at you...then instead of "laying" on the horn, several short beeps can be used. This is the international sign of a "friendly" attention attraction, as opposed to a emergency or possible emergency attention attraction situation.

Since you seem to enjoy things summed up  here goes...The louder the horn the faster you can get the person's attention.

TX_TLC,

ROTFLMAO. :D

Tex - THAT was great.

There's actually some science to horn selection from the MFR standpoint. For instance, dual horns are used simply to decrease the possiblility that at the moment of the emergency need for signalling there would not be a single sound that would mask/blend it. The odds of there being two background sounds at the same frequency are infinitesmal. Higher pitches carry farther and penetrate to a vehicle interior better. Blah, blah. There's generally a disagreement between a nice sounding horn and an effective signalling horn, with the signalling horn basically an annoying discordant sound.

I've seen several folks in the trauma bay following accidents on the interestate where a vehicle changed lanes on top of another one. I am a firm believer in the louder the horn, the better. I don't want to be in an accident that could have been avoided with the use of a $9 loud as "all get out" horn.

I saw those at Autozone today and almost bought them. If you do end up trying them, let us know how they work.

I got a junk yard horn for $1. No idea what it came from, but it sounds ok in my book. Told the dude I wanted a horn, he told me to give him $1 and grab the one off the steps on the way out :D

I had a few opportunities this weekend to use my (relatively) new Hella's - I must say that the guy and the girl in the front seat of the car that was trying to speed up the inside lane (I HATE that) and then cut in front of me literally jumped in their seats (and hit the brakes) when I nailed the horn for a long, not so friendly, reminder.

Horn off, finger down.

I was looking at the bad ass (electric) air horns on the front of the older ambulances we might be selling off at our service , and ... Hmmmmm ;)

Okay, let Mr. Worry Wart chime in for a fraction of a second. Remember that as loud as the horn is, it is still to be used much like a pistol - only if it will save your life. As a victim of road rage once I can tell you that if a tap of the brake is as good as a tap of the horn, tap the friggin brake for gosh sakes and save yourself and your passengers from a problem worse than a fender bender. Now on that note, since the horn is to be used much like a pistol, get the equivalent of a desert eagle .50 for your horn and fire away, when necessary!!! :D :flipoff2: :D

Good to see this thread. I have been thinking along the same lines. I had deer hop in front of me not long ago. Dump _ss stared at me and I hit the horn and I think the deer laughed. It taughted my 80 by jumping right in front of me so close I could hear it hooves scratching the pavement as it jump out of the way. I felt like I was in that commersial with the squarels but with deer.
WTF was toyota thinking - I agree.

If you have every travelled to a third world country then you know that people tend to use horns more as friendly wave. Constantly peeping and waving at friends, neighboors etc. It really is interestingly different and quite comical. I think this is what they must have been thinking.

Hey texas settle down cowboy. Its all good. I know you feel threatened by me. I was just messing around with yall. I don't think its nessesary to have a horn that is loud as all get out but to each his own.

TurboCruiser - I couldn't agree with you more. When I first got my drivers license someone gave me a very good bit of advice:

Your brakes and your horn - drive in such a way that you rarely have to use them.
