After two years of enjoying my 60 and constantly reminding myself that only pansies care about comfort and the ability to maintain highway speed on a vehicle whos primary job is 4 wheeling, I may have run into a deal I can't pass up.

One of my clients is getting rid of a 97 80 in great shape and he knows that I'll be a sucker for a clean cruiser. So here are the specs...

197,000 miles
NO lockers
TRD Supercharger installed 40k ago
Black Exterior (8 out of 10)
Tan Interior (9 out of 10)

Since 100k it has been the daily driver of the wife of a meticulous toyota performance freak... This guy has a Lexus SC300 that puts out over 700hp!! He also has a Tundra with a supercharger. He claims the oil was changed every 2000 miles and I tend to believe him. When he had the supercharger installed he had the motor completely checked out by the dealer and say's that everything was still at factory specs.

I can get this thing for about 10k, let the opinions flow...

Jonathon,

I'm going to guess that based on the state of your 60 you like to wheel. And though you don't mention it, I'm guessing the 60 will go and this truck will take over its wheeling duties.

If so, I wouldn't buy it. You'll kick yourself for not buying a locked 80 when you start modifying it.

Also, moving from a 60 to a normally aspirated 80 will have you grinning about power and acceleration so the supercharger's simply going to amplify a positive aspect of such a model exchange.

Finally, 10k is not a rippin' deal at the moment for a 200,000 mile 80. If you see value in the supercharger - fine. But you could buy a 120,000 mile locked 80 for that money.

I'm guessing again because you didn't say, but has he owned it since new, or did he buy it with 150k on it and add a SC? If this is true, then you really have no idea how it was treated for 150k.

Buy a lower mile locked 80 for the same money, and then add the supercharger (if you think you need it, after driving it for a while). Cost will probably be comprable to that high mile s/c, unlocked rig and the cost of adding lockers, but you will end up with a low mile rig instead! :)

Although I don't have NEARLY the experience of Doug or Ben, I'd have to say that the idea of adding forced induction at 150K is questionable at best (without overhaul of gaskets etc.). I also agree that you could find comparable trucks with much less milage for cheaper than $10K...you just have to look awhile.

I would LOVE to have more power in mine and one of these days I might add a S/C or turbo.

Be aware that you will be burning copious amounts of premium unleaded.

Thanks for the feedback. I got the guy down quite a bit on the price and pending the results from a blackstone oil analysis and a inspection and compression test on Monday I think i'm gonna go ahead and get it.

From other reading I figure it is a toss up between OEM and ARB lockers anyway, and push comes to shove I'll just sell the pristine supercharger to fund the lockers.

The truck is really clean, I also tested a 67,000 mile 40th this week and this truck is in much better shape, I take a lot of comfort in knowing the fanatic that has owned it for the last 6 years.
