Hey guys, I have wondered why my 62's engine is so hot after driving, could something be wrong with it, if so, what? Or are LandCruisers just hot running engines?

Thanks

Carl

The thermostat says its not overly hot, but when you put your hand on the hood, it feels hotter than you would expect and when I open the hood, the heat just pours out. I'm thinking 1. need to get a new radiator or 2.go to jiffy lube or the Toyota dealer and have the radiator flushed out, or all the fluids changed.

One of my 60's had that problem, and I did not realize it at the time, but a serious lack of power too. A blocked cat converter was to blame. Flushing and changing fluids might not be a bad idea at all if you had not done it in a while.

How could I check if the cat was blocked?

Not sure how to check it. I had an exhaust leak, and once I replaced it from the cat all the way back, I noticed the increase in power, different exhaust noise and way less heat coming from under the car and hood.

I've got Tojo at Jiffy Lube right now, getting an oil change and the radiator flushed. I tell you guys if anything changes .

Got my Cruiser back, then drove to the self car wash and blasted off probably close to 2 pounds of grease. It had probably never been cleaned. Oh and there are a few leaks in the radiator :bang:.

Ill keep you guys posted

As old as the truck is and if the cat's never been replaced it could well be causing issues. Assuming the truck is registered in Kansas, you could gut the cat. Not very "green" I know, but greener then it is plugged and cheaper then a new one for sure. None of my junk has cat's ('cept the wife's Pontiac and it's on '05).

Very seen a Cruiser not covered in grease and oil..........

I dont have a cat on mine, but could just a new exhaust system help?

Also what could be some power adders for LandCruiser that are not all that expensive. Expensive being over a grand for one thing.

Thanks

-Carl

My budget isnt really a grand, I was jsut wondering what are some upgrades I could do. I know that LandCruisers are what the name says, cruisers, not fast but mine just doesnt seem to going like I would expect, gotta floor it to really get going, anyoe else have that problem with theres?

-Carl

P.S. Anyone know how much a whole new exhaust system would be?

The section from right behind the cat all the way back, is available from Toyota, for about $120. It's all one piece and includes the muffler.

Good luck.

I used to have a '79 that heated up like you're describing, and had a lack of power. Took it in and it needed a valve job done to it. Couldn't afford it at the time, but the shop (which is no longer there) did the valve job and took payments until it was paid off. After that, it never overheated at all, and i got more power out of that 2F than I ever had the previous 7 or 8 years I owned the cruiser.

Welcome as a new LC owner. In my opinion one of the best mods you can do a new truck is install a mechanical temp guage. They are not very expensive and you can get a real reading on your truck. Once you determine if your truck is running at the correct temp you can then move on to other possibilities of the heat. One question for you though is do you have hood liner still installed on the underside of the hood? If not the your hood will be extremely hot to the touch. With the outside temps we have been having I would expect the air under the hood to be hot. Also would be curious if your carb fan is still connected as it is set to turn on if the underhood temp gets to hot after you shut off the truck.

Yes, I do still have the hood liner, but my 'carb' fan wiring has melted away somehow, when I first had my 62 it was fine, does that fan really make that big of a difference even though mine has no carb?

Yes. I'd strongly suggest you get it functioning again.
