Hi all,

I’ve read through a bunch of Code 25 threads but in a pickle at the moment and could use some help.

I threw the code and took it to a local shop who ran a smoke test and came back fine. I also have replaced most evap hoses, EGR and all is tight. My O2 sensors were bad or loose fitting exhaust so they replaced them, gutted my already trashed cats and I did a cat back delete. No issues. I’ve driven about a hundred miles no issues or lights then today the CEL came back on and I have a Code 25. I did take it to a Valvoline to do the injector cleaning thing but when they removed my boot to put their line in, the engine revved as if the idle speed motor was disconnected but it wasn’t. Scratch that.
Sensors were replaced with these high end ones (forget the name but as much as OEM) which were not available on backorder. Again the truck has about 150 miles on it since they were done and no light or code.

Things I’m thinking about:
1. Plugs- replaced but “may” not be in spec?
2. MAF- plug is a tiny bit wobbly but otherwise secure.
3. Header leak? No idea and no blackening, just curious.
4. TPS? How would I check this?
5. Crank bolt- I did my seal and oil cover seal recently and didn’t have a 300+ ft/lb torque wrench but did have a 250 so we put a bar on it and cranked it down. Sure it’s close or over but no leaks.

Otherwise truck drives great and it’s only the Code 25 which takes a couple drives before it comes back on after resetting it.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

What kind of o2 sensors did they replace with? If this a 93 or 94 you should run oem which is NTK. Some will say the denso work. For my 94 I had to use the NTk sensors. Bosch are known problems.
Also inspect the wiring and make sure the harness is not rubbing the drive shaft or anywhere else, check the pins.
You don’t have a maf, you have a afm doNOT touch the screws. Leave it alone
TPS check is in the manual, buy Fsm or download it for free on this site, probably not the issue
Should probably get a Fsm

Hey thanks! I’ve gotten by so far without but in times like this it’s needed. For the O2 sensors, I could have got the Denso but the shop has had great luck with the ones they installed. I forgot the name but they make high end exhausts, maybe Wright? It had no issues for a while but now it does so…
I did check the harnesses and wiring is all good.

I was going toward something around my throttle body as I have a strong gas smell that has never went away but the Code 25 is a lean code?

Definitely get the FSM it will help. If you haven’t done it already move the O2 sensors to the manifold. It keeps them out of harms way and gets rid of the pair system.

Thanks. I did check the wiring and fitment and all seems to be good. I may end up moving them to the manifold as I found some new manifolds here locally and fairly cheap.

Also, on the CEL, as I do have that heavy gas smell and when I open my tank, there is a huge depressurization, I’m wondering if my charcoal canister is s***? It’s easy to get too but how would I test it? Can that be causing my delayed CEL?

I pulled the hoses off the canister and tried blowing through one and nothing comes out the other side and vice cersa. Is this a valid way to check the canister?

Just pull the hose going into the canister and see if it runs better.
I blew through both sides of the canister and nothing comes out the other side like it’s clogged. I’ve seen a video on using compressed air but I blew hard 🙂
Does that indicate the canister is bad?

There is a good set of tests for the CC in the FSM. Worth following them.

Thanks. It does show all the symptoms. I will have to check the
