I'm stumped, I power washed the housing 5 times now and have pin pointed the leak not in the out put or input seal, shifter shaft seal, speedometer cable, housing gasket, breather fitting, idler shaft o-ring, drain or fill plug, transmission or engine. When I reach up on the top of the transfer case I can feel oil, where is it coming from ? I'm loosing 2 liters every 1000 km while driving, it will stop dripping after I stop.
Am I missing something?
Any help much appreciated.

Put a pan under the transmission, and pull the fill plug. Chances are you are overfull in the transmission. When the seal between the transmission and t-case is going the oil gets pumped from the t-case into the transmission. Eventually the transmission will get full enough it comes out the shift tower.

Try that, and report back.

I checked the tranny fluid and it was about 1/2 below the filler plug....so it can't be the trans/transfer seal either.
Yesterday I noticed the top bolt (the one with the wire connector bracket) was loose and the oil seemed to be coming from there, I put aviation gunk on the threads and washer and re torqued all bolts. It still leaks.
As far as I can see the shifter tower has some old crud on it, but not really fresh oil.
Should I remove the carpet and have a look down or just pull the transfer case?
thanks for any help

Strange...if you are not losing or gaining oil in the transmission, pulling the topside will not help much. If you are losing from the t-case only, then chances are the only way to know for sure where it is leaking out is by splitting the case.

I took the t-case out today and discovered the leak to be caused from a sloppy gasket installation, the gasket was misalign that the top bolt missed a gasket hole completely. Oil would leak out through that gasket area.
Is the gasket the same as early canadian 70 series ?
Thanks for all the advice.
