During the March meeting people expressed an interest in Amateur radio.
It is a sport(?) all by itself if you want it to be. Having more Hams in our club can only help us in the long run. The place for information to start your new interest starts with the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL)
ARRLWeb: ARRL Home Page

Local clubs with more good info are here

Pikes Peak FM Association Inc.

Pikes Peak Radio Amateur Association

If you are still confused or need to ask questions I will help to answer all of them.

If we get a interested group of 6 people we can set up our own class. If there are interested people , but not very many (1 or 2) we can see if there are other classes in the area.

Please post your name so I can get an idea who is interested.

Thanks

David M.

I got my tech license last year, but haven't gotten a radio yet. One more item on the list!

I'm up in Woodland Park and would be very interested in a local class.

I'm interested. David, were you going to post up some more info that we talked about at the last meeting?

Leon

I've lost track of the whole list that I was keeping of who was interested.
I know that it is late notice, how about if we start off this week on Thursday, meeting is at Andy's at 7:00. We can just get a little info out this week and then start in on some regular meetings. I'll call the people that I can remember and if I don't call you, I apologize for dropping the ball.

after going to ham a few years ago, i have realized how much cb sucks!! i couldn't get five miles on the cb, but on mid power on my rig, i was out on porcupine rim in moab talking to another club member who was on an ht (handheld for the non ham folks) who was in a condo in the town, and clear as a bell!

i went real cheap since i'm poor and bought the yaesu ft2800m, which is a mil spec radio and got the dual band antenna from hamstick.com and i've been told by many that it is the best setup among the rising sun folks. only reason i didn't get the same radio for my 80 was i wanted a remote face setup in that.

it's really not expensive to get into. that initial setup was $109 for the radio, and about $60 for the mount and antenna.

over 50% of rising sun is now licensed and not a single person regrets it.

if you get three people that can pass the general class, they will be eligible to become testers for technician class also. if you have any questions, hit up groucho on the rising sun board, he's the son of hardcore ham parents. there are great books out there for all three classes and the online tests on qrz.com and eham help out. most of it is common knowledge and the books and online tests help for the technical part of it.

good luck!!!

New technician pool questions coming soon

I got to studying again and found out that as of July 1, 2010 and new question pool will be used that includes schematic diagrams (new). Those that have been studying from the current pool may want to think about testing prior the the switch. The local HAM club will administer a test on June 12th. I'm trying to find if there will be one in the Denver area prior to that. I found a link below that cycles through the pool questions to give mock tests, pretty cool site. Short notice but if anyone wants to do some group sessions post up or let me know. Come on Andy!:bounce:

Passed

I did it today. Passed the technician test. Now we have one more HAM . Plenty of us to help others get theirs!

It's frustrating to me that the test has to be made more difficult. I had an very scary breakdown at the top of tin cup pass this weekend and I am now thinking of getting a ham radio, I just may go buy one and forget the license though. I have enough licenses to worry about in my life already.

Andy,

I took the test in monument. Take a look at this link.

Find an Amateur Radio License Exam in Your Area

It looks like the next one is in the Springs in June. There is another one in June but I haven't heard of the town and didn't Google it. If you would like to talk about the test or anything just let me know. I'll email the contact person for the test I took and find out if they know of anymore.

Looks like a special test session is tentatively being planned for June 5. Then if need be you could test in the Springs the next week but you won't need to do that. The person's name is Donna and here is what she sent:

Hi Leon,
I do not know of any tests other than those posted on the ARRL site BUT
someone has asked for a special testing session maybe on 5 June. We are
trying to pull it together and if your friend is interested, he/she is
welcome to join us. Have your friend send me a note so I will know who to
contact.

Might not want to go buy that radio before you get your license, FCC law prohibits the purchase or use of Amateur radio equipment by non licensed operators....there is also a hefty fine and up to 5 years jail time for those that operate within the ham bands without a license...

It only takes a little bit of your time to study and some already have the study books from when they took the test. The license is cheap and you dont have to pay yearly, you just need to renew it every 10 years for free... and you get a snazzy call sign (PAPA BEAR...does not work on the ham bands as a call sign!!)

Congrats Leon...

Well said Rui, but I didn't want to go there. BTW I'm radio shopping and am keeping your radio in mind, I may want a few more features in a HT though. Any comments on this thread where I posted questions?
