An inverter will want to see a regulated input voltage, so I would just run it off the battery.

so I think I am going to go the ford alternator route. Just easier and cleaner. Do people think that a 65 amp alternator will work? OR should I go for the 100amp alternator. I found both rebuilt at Kragen and there is about a $40 difference between them. Any opinions appreciated. Just wondering what the difference in welding will be with the extra 35 amps???

Yes. Bigger is better in this application. Why not just go to your local junk yard and find a Crown Vicky or a stinkin Lincoln? About $15-20 and all the rest of your parts are used anyway.

try to find a junkyard with motorhomes or police/fire/rescue vehicles, any of these will have high-output alts.
