I have a question that hopefully someone here can answer so I don't have to get my 40 out of storage and pull the alternator out first.

I have a 1976 FJ40 that needs a new alternator. Photos of the existing alternator are attached. I'm looking at the replacement alternator offered by City Racer, also in the attached photos. When researching this I've seen there are 2 separate plug types, is there any way to tell if this current alternator I have has this same plug type, or a different one? Or do I just need to get my 40 out of storage and pull the alternator out first?

Any advice from those more "in the know" on this would be much appreciated :)

On your alternator, the diagram in green seems to match the connection in the picture you are showing from City Racer.

You don't have the original 3-pin connector anyway since it was replaced by two separate spade connectors, so it doesn't really matter does it?
That cable looks a bit short and has no stress relief (may be the actual cause of your problem).
Id try and factor a bit of slack into it, and secure it to the alternator with a cable tie.

@45Dougal is right. Your factory plug is NLA, so you can use the alternator from City racer without issue.

If you want to fix your wiring, Coolerman has a great little guide available. The plugs are easily acquired from him or many other vendors, he just happens to be cruiser-centric. The alternator you're looking at is setup for the locking 3 terminal housing which is preferred. Install new spades and slide the housing on and you're done.

Note you'll want to verify your wiring is routed correctly before installing, but that is simple verification.

In this particular situation , it would be good measure to explore all your options here ....

- your current alternator is a
3-wire FEN green plug NipponDenso unit
-
i see your B+ Ring Terminal on the back side is Super crusty
- so why exactly are you replacing this current one ?

- your Voltage regulator plays a part here are well ,

- no matter if you do replace the current one or not , as it sits now that could very well be the cause of a charging system issue as the stand alone bad part here in the Equation ?

- as far as the bit more then miss-informed facts you were given regarding the harness side OEM Genuine YAZAKI 3pin
Green Plug Connector ...
- the Green Plug is a Sealed water proof Connector , you most likly have that same one on your 3-wire green Voltage regulator , if it is a 3-wire , and not a 6-wire ?
- that topic is now a option on the table , to help you better make the needed parts decision that best works for you .....

hope this helps ....
:)
