Whats the diff between the a440f and the a442f? I'm trying to learn a little something about my tranny, but keep coming across conflicting info as to what the exact model tranny is in a 91 80. 440 or 442? ive got a 3fe with cruise. if there was an engine plate indicating model, its gone now. Where do i go to search by vin?

well, obviously, the difference is the number 2

assuming we're talking about US gassers, you have an a440f if you have a 91. a440s were in 3FE powered trucks- 1988-1990 FJ62s, and 1991-1992 FJ80s. Although similar, the trannies between the two models are different and not easily interchangeable. A442s were in 93-94s. These will not work with the 3FE without some custom work (read $$$$).

A440's are 100% mechanical (with the exception of the cruise control, if you want to split hairs). And as mentioned above, we behind the 3fe engine.

I don't think there's any pros or cons with either trans (although many will argue the pros and cons of their corresponding motors)
