hello,
a guy I work with has a mid 80's IFS minitruck, and one hub won't lock, turns about 1/3 of the distance it needs to, then stops pretty solidly.
I searched, and found lots on how to teardown/rebuild, but not a whole lot on troubleshooting. I thought maybe there might be some real simple thing that could be stopping it?
any quick checks before tearing it apart??
thanks

There is so little to these things that when you have a problem like this you might as well just rebuild the darn things.

The only thing you may have a hard time with is getting the cone washers off but I have found that an airchisle helps a lot in getting those little suckers off.

the hub hasn't been taken off, he's had it for a couple of years at least, and on tuesday it didn't turn as far as it should have, pretty sure he hasn't run it in 4wd with the hubs disengaged or anything, only strange thing that happened was a flat+tire change on that wheel, now it doesn't work. I got the links on how to tear them down, just wondering if there was a simple something that might not be aligned and would prevent it going into 4wd....

I have had this happen but it was because when it was installed it was turned slightly before the final bolt down of the face. This meant that the splines were lined up correctly and when the dial was to be bolted down, it was turned one hole causing it to lock/unlock incorrectly. All I did was unbolt it and turn it counter-clockwise one hole and it fixed the problem. This probably doesn't help since they hubs weren't taken off. Sorry for rambling.

Is it locking, but just not turning as far as it should? Or not locking?

not sure, didn't want to engage it and gun it to see if it locked, lest something get damaged due to partial engagement, is this not a concern?? I really don't know a whole lot about these hubs, my 40 has warns that seem to work every time, though they are gritty and worn.
we'll probably just pull them apart and see if there is contamination of some kind, though it is a more or less gently daily driven rig.
thanks

dont gun any thing place the hubs in free turn the DS by hand.

lock one or the other to test!!

thats also a drive way, way to test if a non running 4wd works.

Make sure t-case is in 2WD, lock both hubs, then try to turn the drive shaft, if they are both locked, you will not be ablt to turn the drive shaft. If one is not locked, the drive shaft will turn, as will the CV axle on that side.

The perfect tool for installing / adjusting the hub tension spring (the one that goes in the clutch, over the tabs) is the can opener blade on a Leatherman Wave tool.

The sharp, hooked tip lets you get in and pry that spring over the tabs quite easily.
