ok... finished the fan clutch mod.. all went perfect except....

I snapped off one of the water pump bolts that holds the fan clutch on.. I plan to go with just the 3 that are there until I find a replacement...

I guess I over tightened... not sure what the spec is on those guys..

Anyone know the size or where I can find one?

I am guessing your going to have to tear down your front and remove the radiator to R&R it.

Unless with the fan off you have enough left to get it off with a vice grip.

Don't know the size

Good luck

Is there enough of the bolt exposed to get a stud remover on it? If not you really have no choice but to do what Romer is suggesting.

def have enough bolt left to remove... I have a broken bolt remover socket thingy I can use... just not sure what to replace the broken bolt with.... not sure if Toyota has these threaded bolts or not...

Its just a double thread metric stud. I would be surprised if Pep Boys or Kragen or Napa didn't have something to use.

how tight are you guys tightening these things down?

thanks Romer.. are you holding the clutch stable with a strap wrench or a screwdriver to prevent it turning while you tighten?

I use a box wrench and take it as tight as I can by hand.

X2. I just pushed down on the belts taught and tightened by hand as well. I literally did this three days ago and it took me less than 5 minutes to pull the clutch out. Just need to un-bolt the fan shroud and move it forward. Then it pulls right out.

3 studs will work fine.

I've been running 3 studs on my fan clutch since Feb of 2008.

Beno has alway been one nut short anyway.:flipoff2:

How much time do you have? Leave it or pull the pump off and try to get on it with a vise grips. Alternatively pull the whole front off and get on it with a broken stud remover. If I can find my documents there are std tourque specs published for bolts of various sizes and grades. I am sure if you search you will find.

I was hoping I can just remove the fan clutch, the grab the broken stud with my stud extractor, back it out and then insert a new one... thoughts?

Def dont think I need to remove the radiator or the water pump itself.. thoughts?

There is enough room to get in a stud remover and wrench but just be careful to not damage any of the fins. Just stick in a screwdriver between the studs to keep it from moving.

can you elaborate on where to put the screwdriver? not sure I follow that one...

You have three remaining studs on the water pump. Slide the screwdriver down through the remaining studs using the "nub" on the water pump for leverage. This will keep the water pump from turning as you try to remove the remaining stud. I have not done one on my LX but I did have to do it on my old 22R. It will makes sense once you get in there.

I think I got it... the screwdriver is used to leverage the water pump and it keeps it from turning. the screwdriver rest diagonally across the hub face of the water pump slid behind the bolts right..? I put pressure on the bolts to keep it from moving...

Pull the fan clutch off, and if you don't have enough stud to grab it with a socket remover, pull the belts and the pulley off, that will reveal more stud. Hopefully you didn't have to get that far. Otherwise, hold the screw driver between two of your existing 3 studs so hub won't turn and back it out. Step back have a beer and think about it. It's not that hard to gain leverage against something that spins and counter that with force that gets that broken stud out.

You shouldn't have to remove the radiator and all the other mess.

Edit: Yes.

I was assuming the clutch was already off. To be honest, leave the pulley and belts on. No need to remove them and the pulley only gives you like another 1/16". But if you need it, you need it.

It's another 5 minutes of work for something that might be adequate to grip. Hopefully he won't have to drill over a 1/16th, but I have. Error on the side of caution is my method.
