Crap! I've been looking at @spressomon posts over the last couple weeks as my coffee experience has been woeful at best as of late. I remember going to Paris with my wife and reflecting on how damn amazing the coffee was at random spots throughout the city. Admittedly, I've traveled a bit but know nothing of coffee. I've come to realize that it was actually spro I'd been sippin (honestly didn't know the diff)!
I'm not going down the rabbit hole of heirloom machines and all that, but just sprang for a aeropress and porlex grinder, which hopefully will put an end to my Bunn drip machine that is simply ugh! Next up is a pound or two of Redbird, so thanks for this thread!
Seriously, Aeropress coffee can be super tasty. And although it may not require quite the fanaticism of all things getting espresso right, you will need to be exact in a couple different areas to realize perfection in the cup. I.e. temperature of the brew water, grind setting/consistency, weight/mass of the coffee grounds, extraction weight and time (pre-infusion and press time/effort.
You can find a decent .1g resolution scale for < $20 on Amazon, etc. Along with an accurate thermometer for knowing the brew water temp...you'll be getting very good results in the cup.
My wife just got me my first Aeropress for my bday. The coffee from it is leaps and bounds above what I was putting out with the French press. Much cleaner having the filters to brew with.
