Good afternoon everyone,

I have returned with some more noob questions about my recently acquired 1971 Colombian FJ40! After perusing the original manual for my 1971 FJ40 (FJ40 Manual PDF), I understand that there are quite a few maintenance procedures that must be carried out every 3,000-6,000 miles to ensure the rig runs smoothly. The truck was restored in Colombia a few months ago and currently has ~35,000 miles (TMU). While I'm unsure about the entirety of what the previous owner did to maintain the rig, I've got a running list going of things that I plan on servicing upon reaching the 40,000 mile mark, and was wondering if I could have some of the experts chip in and provide some advice on whether my list is sound, what they would add/remove to it, as well as what products they might recommend.

According to the manual, here are the services I plan on carrying out upon the 40,000 mile mark:
  • Engine Oil Change (Anyone recommend a particular product?)
  • Brake and Clutch Fluid Top off (Using DOT 3)
  • Engine Coolant Top off (Anyone recommend a particular product?)
  • Transmission and Transfer Case Lubricant Check and Replacement (Anyone recommend a particular product?)
  • Differential Lubricant Check and Replacement (Anyone recommend a particular product?)
  • Overall Chassis Lubrication (Using WD-40)
  • Steering Gear Box Lubricant Check and Replacement (Anyone recommend a particular product?)
  • Steering Knuckle Lubricant Check and Replacement (Anyone recommend a particular product?)
  • Oil Bath Type Air Cleaner Cleaning and Oil Replacement (Anyone recommend a particular product?)

I sincerely thank you all for helping me through this. Sorry if the list I made is exhausting! Just trying to make sure I can do everything to ensure this thing stays in good shape.

Engine oil shell t4 15-40 Flush the brake/clutch fluid system every few years with fresh sealed dot 3 fluid - old fluid sucks water out of the air.
Takes like 4 gallon of coolant. Change at recommended interval. I bought some longer life stuff this time instead of the old green.

Tranny oil Valvoline Synchromesh manual tranny fluid. I run it in the transfer case too, because it pumps up to the tranny. I ran Kendal 85-140 before in all the gear boxes.

I run a foam air filter with this oil Lucas Oil 10798 High Performance Foam Filter Oil - I use Mystic JT-6 in my grease gun. It was the green stuff, now I use the hi-temp red - wear gloves - gasoline hardly removes it from your hands.

Any other advice from other folks? Thank you!

@charliemeyer007 recommendations are fine. Essentially change the fluids. GL4 in the trans and tcase, you can use the same in the diffs or GL5 in the diffs only. It"s new to you. You don't know what the did b4 you. It's an import. Theres no telling what they did.

I hear that the GL-4 is good for the synchros in the tranny, works in transfer cases and diffs too.

You'll be replacing the grease in your knuckles during the seal replacement anyway, but you can check and re-fill your knuckles through the little plug (with the square head) on the knuckle...
