1991 fj80 3f motor. So I have what seems like typical Toyota clatter under the valve cover and its a bit louder towards the front of the motor so im thinking timing guides as well? doesn't look like too much of a pain the ass but im normally wrong. any pro tips/ watch outs?


also on an unrelated note, if I run duals right off the split headers is this going to effect anything negatively?
 
I can't personally offer tips/advice as I've never done it but I'm overdue for the same service (every 15k miles per the FSM). With that, I've read plenty of posts where folks get through it in <=2-3 hours their first time with a fair amount of singed fingers/hands since you're supposed to do this after the block has warmed up....that might technically qualify as a "watch out".

Good luck, please do share how this goes. Pedantic detail but you've got a 3FE motor, not a 3F.

After many times of adjusting valves on the 3FE and 2F's I do it while the engine is running. This gets the valves perfectly quiet and that's the goal here.
On your 3FE, get the engine hot, remove the valve cover and plug the two large vacuum lines (1 is PCV and other is up front) going to it. Crack loose all the adjustment lock nuts and retighten slightly. Start engine and go to adjusting. This is done by loosening the lock nut and adjusting with a large flat bladed screwdriver. 1/4 turn too tight with the screwdriver and the engine thumps, 1/4 turn too loose and the valves tap. Set in the middle and you're good to go.

A few tips, be extremely careful removing and reinstalling the intake hoses from the intake to the air filter housing. If original, they will crack and break. You will need to reinstall these to allow the engine to run without the valve cover. I also check for level (front to back) on the head surface. You don't want the oil running out the back lip. You can jack up the front or rear to level it out. After you start the engine, try to manually idle down the engine by pulling back the throttle lever to the driver's side. You want to do this at low idle that is why I mentioned to start this with a warm engine. Another tip, don't wear a tie, loose clothing, and if you have a pony tail cut it off before doing the adjustments.

Steve - how long would you say it takes you to do this? And how long would you expect it to take someone who's never done it before?
 
Tlin if you've never done it in any vehicle allow yourself half a day or so just so you can take your time. I was more curious of the difference between these motors and ones I've worked on. They all usually have a small quirk to them that people who are familiar can generalize
