AC just stopped working while driving down the road. Both high and low have pressure. The AC button will not stay on/in. You can hold the AC button in and the light will stay on, as long as you hold it. Mech looked at the compressor while I held the AC button in and he could see the clutch engage but he said it was slipping. Is it possible for the button not to work? Mech says I need a new compressor. Any thoughts

The switch is easy to test if it is bad. IIRC there have been a couple people on this board that had their switches go out (maybe @ZackR or @OffRoadScott ) but it's not the most common fault point for a non-functioning A/C system.

Now, if the switch proves good a common failure point is the A/C clutch. I replaced my whole compressor last Summer due to a bad clutch. The clutches were available from Toyota but after all said and done it was just more cost effective to replace the whole compressor (I was not in town and had to have the truck towed for the service).

If you search, using your favorite engine, put in IH8MUD 80 series and your search parameter. I know from back when mine went out there a couple good threads covering the troubleshooting process.

My switch in deed did fail me. So Scott over at @Cruiserhiggs sourced a known good HVAC control and replaced the switch for me. Funny thing now is that the Recirculation button doesn't stay engaged. But that was an easy fix, just folded up a small piece of paper and wedged it in there. Functions as it should now... LOL

I've also had the switch fail and only work if you held the button down. I think I paid 80ish for a replacement from someone parting out in the classifieds
